Before I begin, the post below is incomplete.

1. Not every coach NEEDS to be added.
2. Some coaches were accidentally missed. I will be happy to add them should they need to be added.
3. If someone thinks a score was incorrect, please let me know.

-------------------------------------------------------

Let’s assume college basketball started in 2011-12. Every school, before that season began, picked a coach and started a program. So essentially Bobby Knight never coached a game. Obviously, this approach is flawed for many reasons but let’s assume that this really happened.

Definitions:

Term: 2011-12 to 2017-18 (7 Seasons). If a coach coached at multiple schools during the Term, all points are added.
Active/Current Coach: A coach who is coaching in college at the start of 2018-19. Coaches who are not active are marked with an “*”.

Please Note: The following is based on current conference alignments.

Let’s First Look at a MACRO Approach: What happened over the Term?

Championships (Conferences and Teams):

ACC (3): Louisville (Pitino*), Duke (Coach K) and UNC (Williams)
BIG East (2): Villanova x 2 (Wright)
AAC (1): UConn (Ollie*)
SEC (1): Kentucky (Calipari)

Final Four Appearances By Conference: (28 Spots in Total)

ACC: (7)
AAC: (2)
BIG East: (2)
BIG Ten: (6)
BIG 12: (3)
SEC: (5)
PAC 12: (1)
Horizon League: (1)
West Coast Conference: (1)

Evaluating the Coaches: This is an attempt to evaluate the active coaches with a Scoring System. It is very hard to compare random coaches to other random coaches without a known and accepted scoring system. Here is an attempt at one for Active coaches during the Term.

Scoring System:

Championship: 100 Points
Final Four: 25 Points
Conference Tournament Championship: 25 Points (See note below)
Sweet 16: 10 Points
NCAA Tournament: 5 Points
Losing Season: -10 Points

Some Notes on the Scoring System:
  • When it comes to scoring for NCAA Tournament Appearance, you only get assigned one set of points per appearance. For example, if you made the Final Four, you get 25 points. You don’t get 25 points for a Final Four appearance, 10 points for a Sweet 16 and 5 points for an NCAAT appearance.
  • Only Conferences with more than ONE final four appearance since 2011-12 get 25 points, otherwise someone named Scott Nagy has 100+ points without ever making it far into the NCAAT.
  • Once I hit 100 Points, I stopped.
