Nebraska never looked good. It would have looked far worse if Nebraska fans had been bunched in one area instead of equally scattered in 3 or 4 widely spaced areas, because the cameras could have spotlighted the density in far greater numbers than any one area of Canes fans.
I watched the Virginia Tech tape last night. Now I partially understand why so many people who watched the game on TV had the impression that there were only 30,000 or 35,000 fans in attendance. The distribution every game is at least 60/40 in favor of the south side. That is the home side, and also the side without sun in your face. Not a coincidence that most people who have a choice in the matter choose the south side. During the spring game -- when it's held there -- the split is at least 90/10. But at regular season games it's in the 60/40 range. Seldom varies.
That overhead shot from the blimp last week always used the angle from the south side. The blimp was on that side so the camera was panning with the sun at its back and not into the sun. Consequently you could see the north stands fully but the seating in the south side was all but obscured. I never saw one angle from the north side.
It was sensible to conclude that the other side was similarly empty, and make a crowd estimate accordingly, but that's not the case. I despise this stadium and wish it would self implode one night while nobody is there. But the crowd numbers are always somewhat better than conventional wisdom or the TV perspective.
The crowd arrives late so the kickoff photo isn't fully representative. The crowd disperses at halftime and not everybody returns to their seats from the concourses or whatever you want to call them. Best depiction would be late second quarter, and using a view that incorporates both the south and north side.
If we lose to Clemson and Duke, the late season games against Virginia and Georgia Tech will be so sparsely attended that you won't have to worry about any type of crowd adjustments or rationalization that you don't prefer or agree with. It will look bad from every angle, with plenty of national focus, including how it relates to Golden's future.
