Tier 2: The Heisman waiting room (three players)

NC State's Devin Leary
Utah's Cam Rising
Miami's Tyler Van Dyke

College football's QB Mount Rushmore (Mount Pass-more?) for 2022 is still waiting on its fourth member, and these guys are best poised to earn the spot.

Van Dyke was forced into action after D'Eriq King went down with an injury, and it took him a few weeks to adjust. But in each of his final six games, Van Dyke threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns. The only other player to do that vs. six straight Power 5 foes in the playoff era was Joe Burrow in 2019. Solid company.

I’m fine with the ranking, to be honest.

Caleb Williams should not be in Tier 1. He looked awful at times last year. Stroud and Young are in a league of their own.

Vs. FBS competition in 2021:

Caleb Williams 172.07 rating, #5 overall
Tyler Van Dyke 152.13 rating, #27 overall

Caleb Williams 9.1 YPA, #7 overall
Tyler Van Dyke 8.5 YPA, #18 overall

Caleb Williams 65.2% completions, #28 overall
Tyler Van Dyke 61.3% completions, #64 overall

Caleb Williams had 4 INTs in 201 pass attempts, good for a 1.99% INT rate
TVD had 6 INTs in 313 pass attempts, good for a 1.92 INT rate

Caleb Williams had 21 TDs in 201 pass attempts, good for a 10.45% TD rate
TVD had 22 TDs in 313 pass attempts, good for a 7.03% TD rate

Williams also ran for 435 yards and 6 TDs on 79 attempts (in college football, sacks count as rushing attempts)
TVD ran for 57 yards on 53 attempts and 1 TD

I am incredibly excited for TVD's 2022 season. He was very impressive last year, overall. But the amount of ****ting on Williams on this board is baffling to me. He looked awful at times? When? They lost 2 games last year, and one was a game his team scored 24 first-half points and he had 288 yards of offense and no turnovers? The Baylor game he definitely looked bad. But he's a true freshman playing a Dave Aranda defense on the road.

IDK....I'm rocking with my guy TVD for sure. I'm really looking forward to how he builds off last year. But the way people talk on this board like he's Dan Marino and Caleb Williams is garbage juice is really weird. Williams was ******* filthy last year overall, and with what prep? He wasn't the starter until Game 4 or 5 and it was his first year in school.

He put up multiple average to below average games. I don’t think anyone is doubting his talent by saying Tyler has shown more so far

Actually thought he had a better year than that. His only 300 yard passing performance was against Texas Tech.

Still he was a true frosh and has Addison this year. He’s a better Heisman pick than TvD

Caleb has a lot of natural talent, so I get the projection, even though I'm not ready to go there. And the offense hype, blah blah blah. But I love Rising. He elevated the entire team when he went in. I like TVD and him together in the same tier, that's a good call to me. I think they both have the potential to take another big step forward, though I admittedly don't know what Utah has coming back.

Can’t wait to see how this all plays out. TVD is a major talent but he won’t have the element of surprise now. At least in terms of his skill set and any tells. A new OC will make it harder on opponents. But you can be sure they’ve deconstructed every tendency and habit he exposed last season. Need a Rambo or better to emerge.

I love TVD but he had receivers that made him look good last year. a drop off in production, particularly in deep balls and 50/50 balls will have a negative impact on TVD's numbers. I hope this doesn't happen.

I’m torn on this. I loved Rambo and Harley and they are UM record holders. But the NFL basically told everyone that they are not pro receivers.

300 yards passing isn't really indicative of anything. Did he throw the ball 55 times to get 300 yards? That's not very good. Stats like YPA, completion percentage, TD/INT ratio, and even rating to a certain extent tell a much better story.

But wait, what about Jordan Travis in tier 9? FSU fans think he's going pro next year. :rk5i6fxwjlgev5j6.jpg:

I'd say that Van Dyke was more consistent than Williams especially since his first two starts (not central conn) were his weakest performances and he pretty much improved as the season went on. I think that Williams is a more dynamic talent, especially running with the ball. Williams also had the benefit of playing in a system that makes everyone playing in it a Heisman contender. While enjoying more skill talent and much better offensive line than Van Dyke had in Miami.

It's funny (or sad) that Miami has had such a vanilla offense with no playmakers for so long that some fans actually believe that guys like Rambo and Harley were why Van Dyke was successful. It's not like either of those guys was Randy Moss. ****, neither of them got drafted (although I think Rambo is an NFL receiver) Van Dyke was one of the nation's top quarterbacks despite the fact that he played with no draftable skill players and only had one NFL caliber lineman blocking for him.

Also, a lot of ACC quarterbacks in the top tiers.

C'mon, you know how this goes. We love our guy, so everybody else has to be overrated. Like maybe if a guy has won a Heisman he's not, but the rest of these guys suck.

Never said he’s garbage; I said he’s not in tier 1 with Stroud and Young. Neither is TVD, for what it’s worth.

I watched Williams play 3 games in a row — Baylor, Iowa State, and Ok. State — and he was not lighting it up by any stretch of the imagination.

He hovered around a 50% completion percentage in those three games and never eclipsed 300 yards passing. His inconsistency is baffling. And he was playing on a roster that was infinitely more talented than that of his opponents.

Not you specifically. And I agree he's not on Stroud and Young's level. I've just seen the dude slandered on this board more than any other QB in the country, and it's weird to me.

Either way, all of this hot air from all of us gets put to the test pretty quickly. Just a few months until we start to find out if TVD is worthy of the praise, if Williams really is elite or average, etc. etc. Can't wait for the season.

I think that Williams tier 1 projections is based on him being at USC, in Riley's offense with a primetime RB (Dye) and 2 first round draft picks at WR. (Williams and Addison). Its hard to argue that he SHOULD be top 4 this season. Its all laid out for him.

Van Dyke can prove that hes worthy and isnt all hype soon enough when we go to College station.

If we are talking pro potential..Van Dyke would be #2 behind Stroud. I would put him ahead of Young. I dont like what him seeing from Tua as far as pro ability. Its not translating fast enough. And Young reminds me of Tua in everyway. I would be interested to see if scouts take a harder look at Young during combine and personal workout season to find any "Tua like" tendencies so they dont make the same mistake twice. (Tua over Herbert in the draft)
