Hurricanes quarterback Malik Rosier, who set a Miami record with 31 total touchdowns last season, was the center of attention this spring. He led Miami to 10 wins and a spot in the Capital One Orange Bowl, but threw too many interceptions downs the stretch, when the Hurricanes ended the season with three straight losses.

Rosier held off redshirt freshmen N'Kosi Perry and Cade Weldon and early enrollee Jarren Williams this spring, but Miami coach Mark Richt said the competition will continue during preseason camp. Freshman running back Lorenzo Lingard, the No. 60 player in the ESPN 300, enrolled early and looks like he'll be able to help right away.

Miami's defensive line, one of its strengths last season, must be revamped. Chad Thomas, RJ McIntosh and Kendrick Norton must be replaced, and highly regarded end D.J. Johnson transferred to Oregon. Making matters worse, Craig Kuligowski, one of the top defensive-line coaches in the FBS, took a job at Alabama. The Hurricanes are banking on former Florida player Gerald Willis III, who missed last season because of off-field issues, and Demetrius Jackson, who is coming back from knee surgery.

On DJ Johnson's departure
ESPN's take: "..and highly regarded end D.J. Johnson transferred to Oregon."

Miami's take: Only the strongest survive. Garvin sent him packing and Rousseau has made fans forget that Johnson was on the team. If Johnson had a bigger johnson, this would not be a topic of discussion.

On Craig Kuligowski's departure
ESPN's take: "...Making matters worse, Craig Kuligowski, one of the top defensive-line coaches in the FBS, took a job at Alabama."

Miami's take: Allow us to introduce Jess Simpson. Players love him more, he fits in better with the coaches, and fans believe that we kept the technician but also gained a recruiter. The results will manifest in due time. So, who's this Craig guy again?

On our D-Line

Thank you, my man. I just hate how, most of the time, ESPN seems to spin things in a negative way, when it comes to Miami. Even when they have us ranked #8 in their pre-season poll, reading their remarks, one would think we were in store for a 7-5 season. It's like they hated their own ranking of us! Lol

I’m not even sure they meant to be negative in this instance, at least intentionally.

What sticks out to me about them, and Fox Sports, or 90% of really any national sports reporting, is that it’s surface and superficial. Which is fine, I guess. It’s sports, after all. But they shouldn’t expect me to take them seriously.

I will say that the default position for most, outside of us fans, regarding Miami, is negative. Cheaters, thugs, etc etc. Most of the country cheers against us. Including most of the sports media.

I agree.

That's the sad part; they don't even realize that they are doing it. They have been hating on us for so long, it has entered into their subconscious thoughts, which is how they can be so double minded, until their analysis contradicts their ranking.
 
When ESPN came into existence how ever many years ago it's been, they set a standard by which many others attempted to follow. They've obviously gotten off track with drastically reduced ratings due to many circumstances - mobile devices, other networks catching up, etc. They've tried many different approaches to boost ratings to no avail. Thus the layoffs and reaching for anything to improve their ratings. I rarely watch them anymore unless the Canes are on one of their networks. As far as our Canes are concerned, it was once "newsworthy" to bash us. I agree with @reg that it seems it's engrained in their subconscious to still throw shade at us. We can handle it!

What #8 team has a writeup that focuses entirely on problems? It's ridiculous. Nothing on Richards coming back and our stacked WR set. Nothing on Joe Jackson, Shaq, Pickney, Thriller or Quan, nothing on the best TE freshmen tandem in the nation? The anti-UM bias is amazing.
