ESPN FPI Garbage

Nobody said it did.

I'm just mocking your either legitimate or feigned ignorance of how these things work.

I would (and will) run circles around you on this stuff. Your entire schtick has been "ur dumb" to everyone, while you can't explain why this particular "algorithm" is worth looking at.

So now that you've been forced to back peddle on your nonsense business claims you've decided to just keep digging a deeper and deeper hole.

So apparently ESPN only cares about business when it's the SEC. They're OK losing money and burying their business partners if it's the ACC or Big 12!
This shows me how naive you are. The answer is 1000% yes - they don't care about the ACC or the BIG12 and are slowly cannibalizing those conferences to ensure their prize conferences/teams maximize their profits. If you've been following this sport you would know that.

BIG12 - They pushed the Texas/Oklahoma cashcows out of the big 12 and into the sec to consolidate more brand names into the sec that would generate more income for the sec. The big 12 was pilfered by espn/sec and now is basically filler content for undesirable time spots that espn needs to fill.

ACC - The ACC is on its last legs and will likely have a similar (i think worse tbh) fate than the big12. By 2030 the top teams in the acc will be pilfered to the SEC/BIG. The conference will unfortunately be in essence a g5 league.

They're basically chugging these 2 conferences along to until they get what they ultimately want - consolidation of all the brand names into the conferences that will maximize revenue. The bottom tiered acc/big12 schools will unfortunately be used for filler content. I hate the conglomeration these conferences are becoming.

My issue with it as well is that I flat out don't trust the data input. Like RF-4CCane said above garbage in - garbage out. And I don't trust espn's journalistic integrity to believe that their starting data input is accurate/unbiased.
I completely agree. I mean.. They use their recruiting rankings in their formula. That's absurd.

Its ridiculous man. I love how they give a high level description of the inputs but refuse to actually share the algorithm so that it can be scrutinized for accuracy haha. The biggest "trust me bro I know what I'm talking about" move and everyone is just supposed to nod along.

Miami and Florida State. You picked Miami. I picked Florida State. And I texted you, I think Florida State's second or third possession. And I said, "Florida State's in trouble." Because when there's a team like Florida State who relies so much on the effectiveness, the general effectiveness of their offense and the complexities therein and the defense is having no trouble tackling you in space and stopping what you would see, you know, these edge runs or loss containment for the defense in certain situations go for two, three yards. Um, that's a huge red flag early on and I thought that in general given the offensive struggles, Florida State's defense actually held up pretty well. But I am shocked at how good Miami's defense is just because of what we saw last year. And we've talked about this in the past in terms of when you rely a lot on transfers and you rely a lot on turnover year to year. It's it's you either hit a home run or you you strike out. And in this case, it looks like Miami has hit a home run. I think Florida State has too, at least on the offensive side of the ball. And honestly, their defense is better, too. Florida State is still, in my mind, a very good football team. Um, but Miami showed me something on defense that that I didn't know that they would have based on how bad they were last year. And to me, kind of solidifies themselves as right now I would have them as probably the number one team in the country.

Yeah. our models, you know, ranking system, which is again, we're still early. Our model only uses on field data, so it's going to be wacky early in the year, but I think it does help set some trends. It has Miami the fourth best, highest power rated team in the country. And and it still has Florida State eighth to be fair. Um, and and why do I sort of mention that the way I do? It's really because I think a lot of power rankings are kind of behind. like Miami's ninth in FPI because it uses priors. It's no great conspiracy theory, but it's based on recruiting rankings and priors. One, these things are not taking the transfer portal into account to the extent they should, and two, teams can just change so radically.

FPI is not a ranking per se. It’s a prediction that if the teams played next on a neutral field what the difference in the score would be. It’s mostly nonsense until you get much farther into the year.

Maybe they looked at our 'up the middle fantasy fascination' and came to the conclusion that this wouldn't go very far - and it sure doesn't put points on the board.

And ***** ESPN anyway.

Everyone shocked at the defense lol. News flash! Did America not see Mario overhaul that entire side including a more competent DC? Lol

It's clear that the pundits are either slow and/or lazy in adapting to the portal era. "Last year's defense" has very little, if anything, to do with THIS YEAR'S defense.
