ESPN Coaching Hot Seat Report 10/12

Just passing on what they posted. I don’t take it as gospel, but since I get the damned Disney bundle for my kids, I read the article and figured I would share for those who don’t have Insider.

Let me ask all of you- does a single word of what he said sound inconsistent with our administration for the past 15+ years and past 4 football coaching hires? Richt fell into our laps but the other 3 were awful and all done on the cheap.
Lies. The Disney bundle is for you.

You can’t pretend you’re broke when it’s public record you spent $4 million to buy out Manny Diaz’s Temple contract. That’s not buyout money for a big name or some hot up and comer HC. It was money for a guy who had never been a head coach ever.

Closer to $7+, but you would have to know the tax rules to put the pieces together. They are obviously not going to volunteer that.

Yeah, I've heard that too but I don't know the particulars about the taxes so I can't really comment on it. I do know that it was AT LEAST $4 million (likely more). So the athletic department isn't nearly as broke as they want fans to believe.

All the more reason the school needs to just pony up and hire Mario..

All of the know nothings can say that money is a problem and we aren't paying because it's how they've operated in recent history. Pony up the cash and prove that they can and will do it.

Legitimately now or never time to spend money. With the CFP expansion and the SEC taking anyone and everyone worth a ****.. you think we're irrelevant now.. wait 3-4-5 years with a new unproven coach struggling again and see.
Soo true. I’ve been saying this. With tv contracts up soon and expansion coming soon, this hire is crucial. With the reputation Miami has, they have to commit now…

I am happy that we have the money to hire a big time coach. But, that is only half of the equation. We still need the right person to make the hiring decision.

Can you imagine giving Blake more money to make this decision? **** no. That will set us back even further. Either we get a new AD or Blake steps aside and lets somebody else who is qualified, knows what a big time head coach looks like, and understands what this program needs make the decision.

If we do that (money + a competent decision-maker), then we are cooking!

I can high level it... $4m paid to Manny to pay Temple. This was effectively part of his salary, so the school grossed up the amount to cover taxes. That brings you up around $5.5-6. IRS has an excise tax of 21% on amounts paid by 501(c)(3)s to employees in excess of $1m, but he was already paid more than $1m from his salary. So 21% times $5.5-6 is another $1.15-1.25M or so. So high level estimate, you are somewhere between $6.5 to 7.2.

An insider article by Adam Rittenberg talked about Miami, LSU, USC, and VA Tech and Texas Tech.

Highlights

We might be in for a ****** year and a half:

- “Coaches who have faced the Hurricanes have described them as a bunch of talented parts without much cohesion or development.” 🤬
- “How realistic is a coaching change at Miami? It’s not as likely as some Miami fans might hope. The noise around Miami doesn’t always match up with the financial reality or the desire to go through a coaching transition.”
- “I think they’d like to move on if they can, an industry source said, but money is always a concern there.”
- Another source said “I don’t think they care enough to pay what it’s going to cost.”
- said we might go after guys like Billy Napier or Jamey Chadwell. No mention of Stoops or anyone else other than a few coordinators (but did say we will prob avoid a first time head coach).

Mario ain’t coming here:

- He said that his buyout is $9 million if he is hired before Jan 14, 2022. It goes down to $6.5 million after that but our admin isn’t gonna pony up for buying out Manuela, buying out Mario, and then paying Mario a minimum of $5 million plus.
- Said that the buyout would prohibit us from making a serious run and that even if he took a hometown discount the overall cost would be too high.
- he said LSU will go after him if he’s their #1 target and money will be no object. They swim in the deep end, we swim in the kiddie pool
- also mentioned Stoops for them (not for us) but said they likely won’t view him as a home run hire
- other names included Franklin, Fischer cause of LSU ties, Lane Kiffin, and even possibly Lincoln Riley

Concluding statement on Miami: “Ultimately, a lack of motivation to make a move, financial considerations, and a top candidate (Mario) who is likely not attainable mean Diaz will be fine for 2022. But he needs to show progress in the second half, beginning this week against UNC.”

His buyout goes down to 6.5 million in Jan
Is it possible to hire another head coach and not fire him until January?

Ok, that reads wrong. Is it possible for us to hire a new head coach and not fire Manny until his buyout drops in January?

I’m sure Blake has it in the works.

In all seriousness I’m sure UM and Oregon would work something out if he wants to come home. I mean if he’s just going to wait until January that’ll hold them and Miami captive. Slowing down both hiring processes. I’d also be interested if Miami is in his buyout , I know urban used to put Nd, Osu or both in his contracts. If they come calling.

UM is like that person who walks around with the $100 bill in their pocket all the time and for some reason cant ever seem to break it so you end up paying for everything. "Hey homie, dang, only got this $100 bill on me and they cant break it, you got me right?" Just clown stuff this program is spewing at us year after year. Especially those of us who have paid great money for season tickets year after year.

I read his contract. Did not see any language about Miami or anyone else. Paragraph 6.3 talks about termination by the coach.
