Espn article - Garvin getting his due respect

When you are coming off a 7-6 season and you played your bowl game the day after Christmas in a baseball field AND got stomped.. you cannot expect the national media to know who most of our guys are.

There is no media bias or unfairness. When we were playing ND two years ago and were undefeated Kirk Herbstreit at the time said Michael Jackson was one of the best CBs in the country. I was like WHOA!! That was the first time I had heard anyone say that all year. When you are playing well, the spoils and the hype come with it. When you aren't, the media forgets about you. If guys like Garvin, Shaq, Pinck, and JT4 want to be national names like we all know they can, they need to show up on Aug 24th. That's where it starts..
Speaking truth Jassid...................once you earn the accolade, you have to keep the media fed for national media attention. Totally agree...

spot on truth. absolutely

Agreed... Look at how well Willis did last year when it was all on the line for him..... Granted he didn't get the pro payoff.. yet.. He will in time.... But the point is he played his butt off.. I expect the same out of Hill..
Man it would have been sweet to have Willis for this coming Saturday. I know he gonna be on sidelines

This. Canes need to prove it on the field, on the 24th.

One nice thing about all this, with all the attention Garvin is getting, people have no idea about Rousseau. I know the opposing coaches will have heard some things from practice last year and this year, but I don't think they've seen much of him. Garvin will attract a lot of attention, so Rousseau should be able to make some plays before they have to make changes to account for him.

I think the author of this article is a bit young.

He wrote about Clemson being dominant at DT "for what feels like decades".

It has been decades.

Has been one of the better schools in the country for pumping out DTs for awhile.

Long before Swinney got there.

I like the phrasing of the article - sometimes a player rises above good to become great - not just all american but dominant and future nfl difference maker. Those guys change everything around them. We havent had one in a long while. Think Wilfork, not Willis. I dont mean Sapp or Reed or Taylor or Lewis, that’s another level of legend altogether, and those players never come around (except at UM!). But KWII, Shockey, Vilma, those kinds of guys.

Garvin might be that. Rousseau might be. Mallory might be. Thomas might be. We have some kids whose ability can separate them, and lift their peers as a result of how they’re used.

I completely agree with both your concept of elite players that have the ability to completely change the game for everyone around them, as well as your statement that we haven't had someone like that around in a while...with one, kind of, exception. I thought that Ahmonn Richards showed the ability to be a guy for the offense that was elite and had the ability to change everything for the guys around him. When healthy, I thought he was our most dynamic, complete WR since Dre. Granted, not only because of his injury, but also because of the offensive system, the mediocre/bad QB play the last couple years, etc., that didn't pan out, but when he was on the field, I thought he elevated everyone around him.

Back to the guys on this year's team, it sure does seem like guys like Garvin, Mallory and Thomas could have that ability, and if they do, it absolutely could take this team to another level. Based on star ratings and hype, guys like Lingard and Pope also appear they may have that ability, but likely won't have the opportunity to show it this year.

I'll throw one other guy out there that, based on practice reports (I know, Greentree legends recently haven't amounted to much), appears that he might have the ability, and if he does, could take the team to another level - Jon Ford. In the past couple years, I thought McIntosh and Willis were often the best players on our defense, and both those guys were really good for us. But, obviously neither of those guys were Wilfork or Sapp. Ford has the build and athleticism to be a dominant force in the middle of our defense, and if he is, the rest of the defense will thrive. Our best defenses have always had dominant DTs, and I think that Ford at least has the potential to be that guy.

While Garvin has been solid during his short career, I'm expecting him to explode this year and take over games. I think he's in line for a 25+ TFL and 10 + sack season. He should be super fresh this year with how deep we are at DE.

If he has numbers like that he’s going #5 overall for sure
