Maybe someone can clear this up. I know that athletic programs are self sustaining and supported mainly by boosters. Does the endowment at a school have any impact on the athletic program at all? Does this affect where donors would prefer to put their money. 800 million dollar endowment is no joke.

Miami's endowment is actually pretty small. by comparison, another private school in the southeast (vandy) is over 3.5 billion. Wake is over 1 billion, unc 2.3 billion, GT 1.7 billion.

Didn't really answer the question, but miami is not rich in this sense.

Short answer is no. The endowment has little-to-no impact on the athletic department.

People can earmark a portion of their donations toward the endowment to be used for the athletic dept, but those that go toward the general fund are used for general upkeep of the university and its academic mission.

Depends on the school, obviously. Stanford, for instance, has all 85 scholarships endowed and many of their coaching positions. The offensive coordinator salary is endowed, for one.

Not only that, but Stanford's huge endowment puts them in a position to be able to offer enormous sums of money in financial aid. For example, if your family earns the median U.S. income, your expected contribution is $0 - with no student loans - out of the $58,000 that it costs to go there.

This helps them more in sports like baseball than in football. In football, everyone has every player covered. But in baseball, they can offer a no debt education while a school like Miami is still going to cost a fortune for most kids who don't get academic money.
