Ok that's fair. I still don't think there was much to be gained by waiting till the last possible second, but the result was so extraordinary (and catastrophic for us) that I'm making too big a deal about it. I'm with @gogeta4 I woulda just not called the TO and let the defense play the play.In the 4th down you are planning on calling a timeout to get a better package and plan of attack. But you want to get as much information out of the offense as possible. Even if to just remove one of the plays they really like in that got to have it situation (as most teams will change the call after a timeout there). But they were running tempo, and we stopped them. They wanted to give the guys a rest maybe to make our pass rush as effective as possible and get the right guys in. But there is no need to immediately call the timeout there.
