EMPIRICALLY SPEAKING | Week 5 Preview: No. 4 Miami (FL) at Clemson
Miami (FL) averages 10.9 yards per pass. Clemson averages 5.7, with 2 passing TDs and 4 interceptions through four games.

Our No. 4 Miami (FL) rolls into Death Valley at 4-0 (2-0 ACC) to face a 3-1 (2-0 ACC) Clemson team that has tightened up on defense since the LSU opener. The efficiency gap is still enormous at 8.53 vs. 4.87 yards per play, but Clemson's last three games on defense (12.3 points and 282 yards allowed per game) say this won't look like the Mighty Fighting Chippewas of da Central Michigan University.

THE NUMBERS (per game, 4 games each)
StatMiami (FL)Clemson
Points scored51.821.0
Total yards588.8314.0
Yards per play8.534.87
Yards per pass10.95.7
Points allowed9.022.0
Rush yards allowed39.5157.8

3 KEYS TO GRADE AFTER THE GAME
  1. Hold Clemson under 300 total yards (season: 314.0 per game)
  2. Hold Clemson to 17 or fewer points (season: 21.0 per game)
  3. Miami (FL) averages 10+ yards per pass (season: 10.9)

PLAYERS TO WATCH
  • Miami (FL):
    QB Darian Mensah (94 of 106, 1,211 yds, 14 TD, 0 INT)
WR Malachi Toney (34 catches, 564 yds, 6 TD)
  • Clemson:
QB Tait Reynolds (54 of 84, 521 yds)
RB Gideon Davidson (346 yds, 3 TD)

THE PICK: U 35, Clemson 17
Last week my cheeky blind drunk monkey picked 45-13 vs. Central Michigan. The score finished 52-3; he paid a heavy price of no bananas for his failure.

Your turn: Does Miami (FL) finally win in Death Valley and avenge the Golden Massacre, or does Clemson's improved defense keep Miami doing Miami things in a season of great promise...AGAIN?

Taint Reynolds will throw at least one TD pass.....To the HURRICANES!!!!!

Taint sucks. Their RB Davidson is good. But Clemson's real weapon is their kicker who kicks FGs like I eat donuts on a Sunday morning after ripping several chongers. He's already kicked 10 FGs this year including 5 against mighty Georgia Southern. He's 10/11 on the year and will likely earn several more attempts this Saturday. And by several, I mean 3 or less.

Their defense might be decent/good, but no way they're holding us under 30 and no way they're scoring more than 20 on offense.

Canes roll, 42-10. F you Dabo. Nice name.

A bad QB with a wet football.... What could possibly go wrong? I think this is the week Fletcher explodes for 200 yards.
