Thank God tom ***** *** loy and that Notre Dame **** puller in ivins are on board! Lmfao
There are very few elite HS QBs that are willing to sit so you either start them and take your lumps or pay/develop them while sitting and then they can leave anyway like Longstreet (and many others). Michigan played Underwood and didn't make the playoffs b/c of it. No good solution at this point unless you allocate a lot of money to the QB position ($3-6M starter and $1-2M HS 5*) and then hit the lottery that they are fine apprenticing and are the 20% that turn out well and not the 80% that flame out). There is. But only if you legit commit to them. What's gonna happen the FIRST TIME one of these portal QBs we bring in gets hurt as a result of how we're approaching this is a 30-40 million dollar team that we've brought in is simply gonna be *** for a year. I personally really disagree with this approach. But I get it. When it works it works, but the alternative is failing miserably and not having the trust of any legit has QB who will be able to help us in that moment. Cause you can't get a starter AND a backup out of the portal yearly.
Everyone already knows my stance on this. As you said they're not gonna come here simply to sit and get passed over by a portal QB. Seemed to work out pretty well for ohio state. It's essentially what Oregon has done also. It's what bama has been done. Obviously you'll take some lumps. But teams built like ours(in vision)are being built yearly will take far less lumps than teams reliant on those QBs. This team has shown what we want to run when it matters. That's pound the ball and play a possession offense. I've been explained this same time last year when the discussion was Emory or beck or matteer, etc. it doesn't matter anywhere near as much to us so long as the QB can do the basics. You run the ball and rely on our core. That's what we've done when we've played our best ball. To me this IS EVENTUALLY GONNA BITE US IN THE ***. Play your own QB and develop him. So we can get multiple seasons out of the position and actually build a core. Those teams are the only way this will be our regular path again. There are very few elite HS QBs that are willing to sit so you either start them and take your lumps or pay/develop them while sitting and then they can leave anyway like Longstreet (and many others). Obviously the best case scenario is getting a stud HS player that can be here for 2-3 years but the reality is even with our ground and pound style an experienced QB has made all the difference (even when you get the 20% good HS player and not the 80% flame out most are).Everyone already knows my stance on this. This foreseeable futures model is making it to where for the legit high school QBs aren't even gonna look at us as a result. Both Cam and Beck regularly checked at the line and had old eyes. Julian Sayin was the poster boy for what you want and almost had the NCAA record for completion % until the games actually mattered (IU and UM); then he was a deer in the headlights most of those games and essentially lost OSU both games b/c of his inexperience and turnovers.
At some point UM is going to have to luck into the OSU, Oregon, Bama model of finding a willing apprentice but for the foreseeable future it's better to bring in the experienced hired gun. Imagine if we had spent all that money on Jaden Rashada instead of Cam/Beck.
Fully agree. My guess is this is the last season we portal shop for a quarterback. It's going to be Nickel or Coleman in 2027. Nickel needs reps and Coleman needs weight. This foreseeable futures model is making it to where for the legit high school QBs aren't even gonna look at us as a result. Maybe but there are less than 5 HS QBs a year that are any good so the odds aren't very good with that strategy to begin with. This foreseeable futures model is making it to where for the legit high school QBs aren't even gonna look at us as a result. I think in Nickel and Coleman we have the QB’s that can and will be developed into starters. I also think the coaches want a 2 year QB, but it had the be the right player, and Williams and Anderson are not those guys. This foreseeable futures model is making it to where for the legit high school QBs aren't even gonna look at us as a result. My prediction is if Nickel ever has to start then we are in big trouble.I think in Nickel and Coleman we have the QB’s that can and will be developed into starters. I also think the coaches want a 2 year QB, but it had the be the right player, and Williams and Anderson are not those guys.
My prediction has always been that Nickel starts for UM in 2027-8, and Coleman takes over after that. Let’s see how it plays out.
We’ll see. He was not that in high school. Obviously the stage is much bigger and the athletes are much better, but he was amazing for 2 years at the highest level of football in Georgia. I think once he gets used to these factors he will shine. My prediction is if Nickel ever has to start then we are in big trouble.
By most accounts, he's a gunslinger with a mediocre arm that puts the ball in harms way with high risk/reward throws.
He doesn't have traits are QB that fits our style.
It should've been the case this year. That was the plan. But obviously in house we don't feel it's the time yet. If so this is simply gonna be the same situation next season if mensah has a good year cause he'll go pro. Then we're right back to square one. Personally I think we lose the majority of the QB room from this move.Fully agree. My guess is this is the last season we portal shop for a quarterback. It's going to be Nickel or Coleman in 2027. I do agree that we need to get away from the one year QB though; whether its a HS home grown guy or a portal with 2+ seasons.
Lincoln Riley has played two HS recruited QBs in the last 10 years and doesn't seem to have any trouble lining up 5* QB HS recruits every year.

Likely true, but a lot of other schools they won’t be looking at as well. This foreseeable futures model is making it to where for the legit high school QBs aren't even gonna look at us as a result. When you show your hand over and over it simply becomes what you are
