OP. The chart is not accurate. It still includes Cedrick Wright who is no longer on the team. We currently have 66 scholarship athletes enrolled. If we assume everyone from the 2017 class qualifies, and we add in Deejay Delaney, we have 81 scholarships used up.

We have 12 Seniors and RS Seniors, so assuming no further attrition, we currently have 16 spots available for the 2018 class.

In my opinion, there are 4 underclassmen who have a shot to leave early for the NFL (Walton, Willis, McIntosh, and Norton). Additionally, there are 7 RS Juniors who I believe the staff should consider not renewing for a 5th year (Rosier, J. Jones, McCray, Smith, Mayes, Gray, and Langham), and 3 others that should be encouraged to transfer (Fines, Mahoney, and Henley) if they don't start contributing this season.

That leaves 30 spots available subject to NCAA limitations on class sizes, early enrollees, and initial counters. Here's a look at the class sizes by year. The first number is the number of athletes signed, and the second is the number of initial counters (after subtracting early enrollees carried back to the previous year and adding early enrollees carried back from the subsequent year). The NCAA only allows 25 initial counters per year.

2010: 26(23)
2011: 21(25)
2012: 32(25)
2013: 21(25)
2014: 29(25)
2015: 25(25)
2016: 22(25)
2017: 25(22) - includes Deejay Delaney

Given that we can carry 3 early enrollees for the 2018 class back to the 2017 class, a class of 28 certainly seems possible. I'm thinking 26 - 28 is a good estimate.

Wow, that is a lot of work. Thanks. One less complicated question but more controversial: How many would Butch need in next class to have 5 first round picks in three years?

All you guys wanting a class of 28 should look one more yr into the future and see what signing over 20-25 does for the next class. Not good.

Let's assume that Canes1968 is correct with the 5 Juniors not returning for '18. That puts us at 16 kids for the '19 class and 19 from the sophomore group (minus the 3 mentioned). Pretty safe to assume that we loose a few to the NFL from Richards, Shaq, Pinckney, McCloud, JJackson... and projects like Jeff James, Tre Johnson, Martin... will get thinned out. Doesn't that sound similar to the '18 round of recruiting, 22-26?

Linearly speaking . . . true! But attrition (for whatever reason) does alleviate potential pain!

Too many hypotheticals. What if no one leaves for the NFL? What if we have 6-8 leave for the NFL and 6-8 transfer that are also good players?

'18 is stacked with talent, you take what you need and worry about '19 when the time comes. Sure if the '19 class is down to 10 spots they will save a few and try to find some GT kids so the spots are still available for '19. All guesses at the numbers today are just that, guesses.
