Effect of Gurvan out first half vs Clemson

It is a huge loss. In general, you need every swinging **** you have when you play the No. 1 team in the nation, esp starters.

More specifically, Carter isn't good in space and we have no depth. The practice reports on Balom are nice, but I prefer he not get his first action at night in Death Valley. I think Clemson does whatever they want in the first half, and we need to go score for score with them.

What I am interested to see is if Manny/Baker make any adjustments for this game. You see what a good coordinator like Lashlee does, how he schemes for the opponent and attacks their weaknesses. I mean, all coaches do this to a certain extent. But are we gonna agressively shoot the gaps with our DL, like we always do? Cause that seems like a recipe for disaster to me.

Etienne with the cutback lanes. Our LBs who are slow to react and not great tacklers. Quick passing game neutralizes our DL, as we've seen a few times over the past few years. And they have a few speedy WRs who can take the top off the defense.

I don't have the answer, but I think the defense we've been running this year combined with the personnel doesn't bode well to slowing this Clemson team down. UVA has a pretty stout D, so hopefully they can show us a few things. For the gamblers, I took a shot on UVA +28. That line should be closer to -21.

I keep saying the keys to the game are:

1) We NEED to score early and move the ball effectively in the first half;
2) the DL must be disruptive. This doesn't necessarily mean sacks (although that would be nice), but it must alter what Clemson is able to do.

Our defense has a tendency to adapt and adjust well during games (Ville was an exception). I will credit the staff for this general trend. But for that trend to matter, we will need to survive the first two stanzas. If we do, **** will get real interesting.

Frierson or Keontra should be cross trained in practice for the next two weeks to spell carter or bolden if need be

Agreed unless they trust Balom, who they seem to like a lot.

But Keontra has a lot more practice reps at safety than Balom and I wouldn't be opposed to him rotating with Bolden/Carter.

I think your only chance vs Clemson is to try & take Entienne away. If Lawerence beats you then he beats you.

Gurvan flashes, but not enough to miss his production. It will be a net negative, but not by much.

Just don't be running any man coverage from the safety position and we're fine.
Against a team with their WRs and a RB like Etienne, I think it's a bigger loss. If I'm their OC, I find a way to isolate Amari Carter in space the way I imagine our OC will try to isolate Nolan Turner or force him to take good angles (and change direction).

If I'm Blake Baker, given Hall's absence, I try to keep Amari hugging the boundary and over the top. To answer, Clemson will likely run some horizontal plays to the boundary. Amari would have played a ton of snaps anyway, but now there are more opportunities for the mishaps in the open field against their runs/jet sweeps/screen game.

Hopefully, he steps up. Can't do **** about it now.

Bubbs is the best safety on the team, full stop. Carter is serviceable and hits like a truck. I think Hall has proven useful, but not a game changer this season. We will be ok.

Honestly I hardly notice him on the field I know he’s solid and probably is in the right spot more times than not but if Bubba Bolden on the field then I can sleep well in regards to the safety position.

Clemson will expose us in the flats where our lbs are too flat footed. this is our problem. as of now, they will eat us alive with the short 5 yard passes. hopefully baker can correct this. even FSU exploited us with this. clemson doesn't have the recievers like years past.

As good a tackler as there is on our defense but he's almost always a step slow in coverage. Pretty big disappointment to this point considering the hype. We have our play-making safety in Bolden so we really don't need Hall to be Ed Reed but hopefully Avantae and/or James Williams live up to the expectations.

Said this in another thread. We will be fine the way Bolden is playing especially for one half. Especially if Frierson keeps playing at a high level at that Striker position. They will hold the fort down until GHall comes. Losing Phillips for a half would have hurt way worse.

I had the Championship Edition of Madden back in the early-mid 90s. I think it was only released to rental stores. Anyway, the 72 Dolphins were awesome in that game. Jake Scott intercepted anything thrown in his zip code. I need to find that game again, and I'll own you all! ;)
Jake the Snake...my all-time favorite Dolphin.

If this staff wasn’t scared to cross train players they would’ve already had Gilbert Frierson getting work in at the safety position. Bubba and Frierson might be the better safety duo.

Can somebody tell me what Gurvan Hall is good at bc I don’t see him ever making any plays in coverage, or any solo tackles, or just making any impact plays at all when it’s needed. I’m sorry but he’s a bust, Jamal Carter made more plays than him.

This staff should’ve moved Hall to striker behind Keontra Smith and moved Carter to OLB bc both are terrible safeties. If Bolden doesn’t make the play nobody is.
