Ed Reed COS?

My fear, is that if/when **** goes sideways in the future they will drag him out like a Macy's Thanksgiving float, put him in front of a camera, and have him make excuses for everything while feeding the fanbase memberberries. I think that they think we wont be so toxic if a Cane legend is the one spouting nonsense about the state of the program.

If Reed really is the GOAT like we all think, and bleeds orange and green, and has always been known as a straight shooter who really understands the game, do you honestly think he would put himself in the position where he makes excuses and spouts nonsense about the state of the program? He's not hurting for money, so protecting a job of a couple hundred grand/year when he can always go find another job making just as much or more certainly isn't going to cause him to make excuses and spout nonsense about a program he loves.

If the point isn't to establish a figurehead in the form of a fan favorite legend, and the job really is that influential, why didn't it go to Alonzo?

And LOL at the notion that they wont wheel Ed Reed out to spout bull**** about #buildingchampions when we go 7-5. It will look like one of those Isis hostage videos and it will break your heart.

This guy gets it. PR stunt.

No one here knows what issues arose in the Highsmith talks. We can speculate that Alonzo was looking for a GM type role, and that would fit his current place in life. He’s a 55 year old man with NFL front office experience.

Ed Reed is none of that. A problem I see with our fans is that they see one occurrence and then try to parallel every subsequent event to that initial event. They did the same thing with Tate and King. Tate didn’t pan out, so we shouldn’t be excited about King.

Ed Reed is a football savant. He wants to be involved in coaching and mentoring and loves this program. Why the fck would UM fans care what role he would have? Any exposure to Ed Reed and his knowledge of the game, film study ability and winning attitude would be beneficial.

that's fair.

my point was that you and I are looking at it through a rational lens.

Ed Reed + Position with Program = Good.

and i don't disagree. but reading the tea leaves, I just have an itch that says maybe the clash of egos and agendas are more nuanced than that.

then again, maybe my itch is just a case of the crabs, so who knows.

either way, like you, i'd love to see E20 back at the Hecht.

So you don’t think a legend like Ed, who is renowned for his film study and work habits and would be someone that recruits’ parents would be in awe of and who might later transition into coaching DBs, could be of ANY real benefit to the program? None?

UM is just going to plunk down $250K or so to Ed just to appease CIS?
Preach.

I’m wondering whose idea this was.

Did it come from the BOT as a directive to Flake? Was it Flakes idea? Is it being done to calm the masses because Zo wasn’t hired? Is the BOT putting him in place as a watchdog?

I really like to know how this job came about and what it’s supposed to entail.I just can’t believe Reed is going to be some kind of glorified secretary for Manny making copies and setting up Meetings etc. and I definitely can’t see him as some kind of yes man.

Ed Reed being a part of the program would be great but how will he be used. We’ve had HOFers around the program forever and it hadn’t really helped much with recruiting at least not the top players so to think just because he will walk into a school the kids yea might be impressed and want an autograph or a picture ok I agree but I don’t think it will cause a mass commitment of 5 star kids either.

I hope Reed comes aboard but I hope he’s given a job that can actually help in bringing wins and not just coffee to Manny.

Still trying to figure why any UM fan wouldn’t be drooling at the possibility of having one of the smartest football players in the history of the game around our coaches and players every day.

12 pages of back and forth on “fake job” and “appeasing the fans.” Who gives a ****? You ain’t paying him, and he’s a football savant and a recent enough NFL legend that recruits and their families would melt in his presence. What exactly is the downside?

Exactly. Our fans have gone mad. There isn’t a downside. If the foundation is trash, then neither Highsmith nor Reed will be able to fix it anyway. But, we will receive great structural and cosmetic upgrades along the way with Reed as an ACE Carpenter- just in time for a new Builder to arrive.

I don't care if he's giving tours at the Hecht, any football program is better by his presence in any capacity. Success is contagious.

So you don't trust Ed Reed to be able to see through the "bull****" and either quit or say what he really thinks? Like I said, it's not like he needs the money or the job, and he loves the program. So either he's a legend who understands the game and will work to help the program he loves, or he's so soft and spineless that he will just spout whatever bull**** he's told to regardless of whether it hurts the program. Which is it?

Don't know how credible this dude is

Don’t see Ed as COS, he’s a hands on coaching type. Then again, he’s a bit too flamboyant and living the good life to be a coach. Better as an NFL Coach (DB Coach) IMO.

Bro, who the f*ck cares whose idea it is? UM isnt preying on Reed because he's broke and can be paraded around like a show pony. And I doubt someone said, "We need a token gesture to appease the fan base! Call Ed Reed!" I strongly suspect that Reed wants to be part of the program and eventually get into coaching (since he has actually said he wants to get into coaching). If Diaz had hired Reed to be Sp Teams coach, 3/4 of the board who lose its collective minds for Diaz hiring someone with zero coaching or recruiting experience. Now there is an opportunity for Reed to get his feet wet and if Banda or Patke take other jobs or get fired, Reed can be hired into the position. In terms of his film room knowledge alone, the man is worth his salary. Former players in NFL and college have said that Reed is the GOAT at breaking down film. Now take a physical stud like Bolden and let Reed explain what he sees on film. This is a an A+++ hire.

How has an entirely unsubstantiated tweet by some nobody that sounds as incredulous as can be generated 12 pages of posts?
Because they're enough idiots around here who jump on the chance to **** on the program. This off-season has made it easy to out those guys. The same chumps will bring that negativity even if we're 11-1. Us playing poorly lately has just given them enough cover to be douches....

Tbe illusions of grandeur with some of these chumps reeks of self-esteem deficit....

Exactly. You've got people on here, even a staff member, claiming that Reed would allow himself to just be a pathetic puppet that would spew the party line and cover for bad management. Given that he doesn't need the job or the money, and loves the program, that makes no sense. What would his motivation be to serve as a mouthpiece if he really felt that the administration was damaging the program that he lives and breathes for?

Think back to the meeting where D'Onofrio, Paul Williams and others were reviewing film and debating whether to offer a certain player. I still have nightmares today over that vignette. Now, insert Ed Reed into the room. Problem solved.

Bring him to me.
