DVD’s thoughts on the portal

A lot of these kids hitting the portal think it’s a way to get another big payday….it isn’t.

One of my favorite pieces of advice is the "Tarzan Principal". Don't let go of your last vine until you have a firm grasp on your next one.

A lot of kids are going to be left mid-air without a vine. That is going to be true in any year but I suspect this one will be the worst. The extra COVID year has flooded the market with more players than roster spaces available.

DVD just keeping it real.

I might be dating myself with that reference but it holds true.

Agree with DVD. And I'll also say, when you look at the portal, notice the list of schools, they're mostly G5 or below. You know why that is...because G5 or below kids are on year to year scholarships, so you can be axed. Whereas in P5, your scholarships are basically guaranteed for 4 years with a few exceptions. So if you have a P5 scholarship, better think twice about hitting the portal unless you graduated like Frierson & others. Otherwise, like Streeter said on Footballville, the portal is a graveyard.

There are going to be a shlt ton of kids hitting the portal this year, not even talking about Miami here, it’s going to be crazy. Could be just that, who knows?

Heard a guy on Footballville say an astonishing 8K? kids hit the portal a couple of years ago. LOL, I didn't even think 8K kids even played CFB, but apparently that figure was true.

Just talking in general because he see all these kids hitting the portal and a lot of them won’t have spots
Exactly. Today's college athlete has to be honest with themselves. There's a contingent of players that are "encouraged" to enter the portal, but the majority are unsatisfied whether it be playing time, development, culture, etc. And for the latter, they're the ones that DVD is speaking to.

Its the era we live in with these kids. In my day, you didnt leave your job unless you had another one secured in the bag. This generation of kids just walk off jobs and leave destiny in the hands of hope. So im not shocked that most of these kids jump in the portal and foolishly dont even have any offers. Thats the craziest thing Ive ever heard honestly. Jumping into the portal with no offers. Smh.

This is what keeps me coming back.
Well next time you come back try actually reading it. He said its not a shot at anyone, not that it isn't about anyone. Or maybe it's just a coincidence that he works with CBs and one of those players who have no game film had a parent complaining about their playing time.

Every team can have 85 players on scholarship. That hasn’t changed. So for every kid that hits the portal and doesn’t land anywhere, there’s another kid who will get that spot on the 85 who otherwise wouldn’t have that chance.

It’s net neutral. Some will win, some will lose, but on the balance the exact same number of kids will have scholarships

Some kids who don’t belong in P5 will move down, and some kids who are too good to be G5 will move up and get their shot, and it will balance

DVD has been a very effective recruiter for us. Normally, I wouldn't advise a post like his, but if this is part of the recruiting persona that has worked, I'll defer to his judgment.
i think plenty of people will appreciate the realness. it matters that a guy like him comes off as genuine

Deion just told every player on Jackson State the same thing.

There are literally thousands of dudes just sitting there and end up going nowhere.

Coaches say this stuff and it goes in one ear and out the other because players/fans think its coming from a selfish place. I think coaches are more just telling the truth and giving sage advice over any ill intent or direct message to particular players with messages like this because they see how many of their players end up lost in the ether. Literally thousands! Its wild.
