Duke Post Game Plus/Minus

Golden has brass ones starting the true frosh might be one of the biggest calls in this programs history....

remember when everyone wondered if Heaps should really been in there after 2 games of Kaaya or already had RW coming back in?

Yep it took brass balls for golden to start a true frosh knowing the fans wouldnt understand that mistakes were going to be made and he would take all the heat... Looks like it might be one of the best decisions a coach of the canes ever made

What a ridiculous statement. Going with the obviously better player isn't a sign of great coaching or bravery. And the majority of the fan base wanted Kaaya.
not really, that was a ballsy move by Golden. sure the fan base wanted Kaaya. but when it comes to winning games and securing job security -- the safer route is to go with the vet.. how many true freshmens are actually starting in college ball? not many. LSU and Clemson have 2 stud freshmen qbs for example and they still choose the vet qb..

Plus:

+ The Defense: They gave up 260 yards and 10 points. Good game tonight.

+ The Running Game: Duke, Yearby, the OL...all of them played their asses off. They should have had a million more carries.

+ Waters: Great game. He won't see the field for 2 weeks now.

Even:

= Kaaya: He started out white hot, then started looking shaky. Then the pass to Yearby happened. No turnovers by him tonight. Good job overall though.

Minus:

- Coley's playcalling: We were gashing them in the running game and we got into trouble when we started going away from it. Bubble screens have to go. Yearby and Duke were unstoppable, why go away from it in that situation?

- The refs: Took a TD away from us and the flag on Perryman was absolute bull****. We've all seen people do that in a game 40 billion times before when they drop a pick. I've never seen a player get flagged for it in a game. Complete horse****.

- Injuries: Sucks to see Kc McDermott and Gadbois go down. Especially Gadbois, because I've been hard on him all year and he played great tonight. I actually liked him getting in Gregory's face last week too. I hope it's not too serious.

- Gus Edwards: Stop.

Thoughts?

Full recap sometime tomorrow.

Coley and No D both should consistently stay with what's working!!! We should NEVER SEE A LB COVERING A SLOT WR, NEVER!! We gave up big plays from that set. Also we should never see fentress on the field in the RED ZONE. We have three highly recruited ballhawks in Crawford, Bush and Carter. Come on D take your defense to the next level!!!!

Gus should only play in blowouts to get him doing what we need him to do. Give Tucker those short yard carries, it's only a few touches!!!

Staff gave me hope last night with the playcalling. They call a game like this against Nebraska and Louisville the outcome would be different. We have several of the top all-around players in college football on offense, one of the top lbs and several defensive players on defense that could be, if they got to play like last night in the first few games. Let them do what they do!!! Test them. How about those DBs!!!!

Agreed on all points
Gus needs to transfer
Gadbois is nasty
Grace was everywhere
Walford is making himself money
Yearby is tougher than we gave him credit

He won't be seeing the field much next season.

+ on offense:

Duke and Yearby TOGETHER in offensive sets! More of this PLEASE
Kaaya to Yearby. Both the outcome of the play (sealed the game) and the progressions that Kaaya had to go thru to make this play happen!
Walford- dude is beasting
Waters: more of this PLEASE

+ on Defense:

Grace is balling! More of this PLEASE
D'onofrio: If we are going to bash him for his numerous mistakes we must also praise him for THIS game

- for game:

Coley HAS to catch that bomb NO EXCUSES
Refs: Gave Duke a call that was very similar to the NONcall on Dorsetts TD
Gus: Yearby HAS to take ALL those minutes. Gus has been given all the opportunity. Time for a change.
Injuries: cannot afford ONE more on OLINE

Was at the game- good crowd...

GO canes

Bubble screens don't need to go. They just need to be used better. I don't mind using them in first down to mix up the run and still get 4 yards with a chance of busting one bigger. The issue is Coley just isn't the same guy this year and he's been by far our best receiver in tight spaces. He's otherworldly with his vision out there. the whole incomplete pass, obvious one yard run on second down is just terrible, miserable play calling and it's no wonder our 3rd down conversion is a joke. We are a better running team with Tucker healthy so mix that in, spread em out throw screens sometimes, to be more efficient on first down. Third down is the one that nets the stat about "converting" but often times it's the converting a positive on first down that allows it. Gotta clean it up.

With Duke, Yearby, and Berrios, each one of them is good for 5 yards almost at will, in many different ways. Facing a defensive alignment we saw last night, we should get them the ball on first down every chance we have.

I just don't see how it is safer to go with the worse player when the competition apparently really isn't even all that close. That actually screams stupid. Going with the clearly better player is never really a brave move.

And I'm actually surprised with how many true freshmen are starting this year. Kaaya, Freebeck for Vanderbilt, Watson about to win the starting role for Clemson, Brandon Harris at LSU playing the majority of the game, Clayton Thorson playing for Northwestern, and Chance Stewart for Western Michigan. That's more than usual if you want to compare to Hackenberg and Goff starting for PSU and Cal last year.

Agree but I have to be the debbie downer here. Boone and their passing game was as bad as I've seen one.

i agree. there were drops by duke receivers and several over throws by boone. a few that would of gone for tds.

It seems to me that many on here are so intrenched with Dorito's issues that Coley is getting a pass. Coley's play calling suxs. We run for 8 under center and the next play it's shot gun with no back and pass , why? Keep pounding the ball until they stop us. This practice opens up play action. I think we are in the shot gun way to much and I think this team has the players to take advantage of defenses in the pro set.

How many times do people have to be told that Coley hurt his shoulder weeks ago & still isn't quite himself? He's playing a bit tentatively right now and you can see he's not 100% yet. Next week should be better for him.

The staff needs to get Stacy Coley situated. Guy is going through the struggles and the playcalling for him is not helping him either.

Arguably our best threat on offense with Duke. Coley a special talent and is going to waste. Chalk it up to whatever it is. But we have to get him in a groove. I see Waters, Dorsett, Lewis, Berrios and Walford all in synch with Kaaya. But we have Stacy on another planet.

Idk when it's gonna happen, but we gotta get Stacy Coley right. We got another 7 games to go so their is plenty of time. But clock is ticking, just get Stacy right please. Kinda sad what's going on there. Very special talent.

Refs were terrible. A lot of people around us were upset with their attempted hose job. They were booed off the field at half time. I thought the Perryman call was b.s. but on the other hand, he knows the rules & it could have hurt us in a really tight game.

Typical Ref BS. Perryman call, nonsense.

Dorsett TD, come on. Refs overturned the exact and I mean exact play in Duke favor the drive before. But for some reason Dorsett does not get the overturn. Horsesh**!

Well he was hurried several times. Not throwing out accolades here, just saying it was better. But remember it's Duke, which if located a fee states north would be an Ivy League school.

Denzel sums it up
Denzel Perryman asked about D criticism: "Outsiders, fans, they see it from a fan standpoint. They don't see it from a football standpoint."

States it was just a matter of execution.. Simple as that

Simply not true. Game plan was completely different. We rarely played 2 safeties deep unless it was an obvious passing down. Actually we went to it a bit in the second quarter and that's we they started moving the ball. We stacked the line a lot more, had our backers 2-3 yards closer to the line and played single safety the majority of the game. I hate D'Ono, but I'll admit he adjusted this week....I hope it's a sign of a fundamental change going forward. I did see some of the conservative bull**** creep back in the second half, but we were up so maybe it was justified a bit.

We rarely played 2 safeties deep against Nebraska if you're talking about at the snap. The difference is that Nebraska controlled the LOS and Duke couldn't do that. Nebraska rarely got behind schedule while Duke frequently found themselves in 3rd and 5+. When Duke found those downs, we brought a lot of 5 man pressure which isn't exactly uber-aggressive. They couldn't hurt us when we did that because of bad quarterback play.

I think people wondering why we've never been this "aggressive" are going to be frustrated when we play a good offense (especially on the road) because I think what Perryman said is right on and not some confabulation--we executed better and Duke failed to defeat the things that we were doing. But, we didn't change into some upfield attacking defense overnight. We just held the LOS, tackled better, and finally got some 3rd and longs on which to bring a bit of pressure that they couldn't pass through.

I'd love to see a chart of our defense over the last two games....we seemed to play a ton more single safety on early downs, but I haven't rewatched the Nebraska game. Also, I think this is the first time in the last three years we held any power conference team to under 300 yards, so it can't just be "they sucked". I'm sure we won't hold any other team to this anemic output, and I know we didn't fundamentally change our scheme, but we seemed to change philosophically and that's a positive.
Looked more like a hybrid 4-3 to me.

22-10 wasnt enough the vegas line was 6-7... So we actually exceeded expectations .... This isnt 2001

If you actually watched the game you'd realise that the gulf in talent between the two teams was significant.

They literally couldn't stop Duke and Yearby on the ground.

We should have buried them, based on how that game played out.
Well considering the bogus Dorsett call, and a few others I would say we put 'em in a hole but didn't bury them. Course wouldn't have beat an FSU or a middle of the road SEC team but we did better (at home) against a decent but not really a top 25 team.
Show me an equally good win against GT and VT then ask me again.

bogus Dorsett call that was a TD.

And Stacey Coley drops a wide open TD for the 3rd? maybe 4th time in his career?

Kaaya should have had another monster game of 300+ and 4 tds.
