DTs and Jackson update - Tuesday 11PM

Jarron Jones (ND) made more plays in the game last year than Norton has in his career and he wasn't selected in the last draft. Lawrance-Stample from FSU also went undrafted.

Being a solid starter at a marquee program doesn't equal draft lock.

dumb decision if they indeed go pro. they aint even ready for that level yet and will sell themselves like a $10 hooker. instead choose to come back, refine your skills, and get 1/2 round money

Why does this logic make sense on this board?? They rathervmake money now than two years from now it's really that simple.

Patience is a virtue and the companion of wisdom

A bit misleading. FCS and fringe declarations at oddball schools that likely are grade casualties fill most of that 30%. Also, players with mystery injury history end up undrafted.

There aren't many of those and if you want to count that then the other end of the spectrum is that the 70% includes can't miss 1st/2nd round early entrants.

I would imagine the real number is less than 50% of players not expected to go in the 1-3 rounds actually get drafted.

Here is last year's list.

I don't see a ton of players that fit your mold or that of RJM or Norton here. Lower level schools, never-on-the-radar players, discipline problems, or really poor athletic testers.

» KD Cannon, WR, Baylor
» Devin Childress, WR, North Park
» Michael Clark, WR, Marshall
» Jerod Evans, QB, Virginia Tech
» Jeremy Faulk, DT, Garden City CC
» Tarean Folston, RB, Notre Dame
» Isaiah Golden, DT, McNeese State
» Jermaine Grace, LB, Miami
» Derrick Griffin, WR, Texas Southern
» Titus Howard, DB, Slippery Rock
» Tim Kimbrough, LB, Georgia
» Jerome Lane, WR, Akron
» Keevan Lucas, WR, Tulsa
» Damien Mama, OL, USC
» Deon-Tay McManus, WR, Marshall
» Speedy Noil, WR, Texas A&M
» Marcus Oliver, LB, Indiana
» Aaron Peak, DB, Butler County CC
» Devine Redding, RB, Indiana
» Travis Rudolph, WR, FSU
» Ricky Seals-Jones, WR, Texas A&M
» Garrett Sickels, DE, Penn State
» Damore'ea Stringfellow, WR, Ole Miss
» Darius Victor, RB, Towson
» Charles Walker, DL, Oklahoma
» Stanley "Boom" Williams, RB, Kentucky
» Joe Yearby, RB, Miami
» Ishmael Zamora, WR, Baylor

Not only does a player drafted in the later rounds lose out on significant signing bonus (guaranteed) money, they significantly hamper their ability to collect their base salary by being an active roster member. Late round picks are hardly guaranteed a roster spot beyond pre season. If a late round pick isn't productive right away, GM's have no incentive to keep them on the roster. NFL GM's will keep a developmental 2nd or 3rd round pick 10 times out of 10 over a developmental 6th round pick. Remember, it's their job do identify talent and draft accordingly. If they have to axe an early pick it makes them look like bad drafters. If they have to axe a late round pick, it's no big deal because they were just taking a flier on the player and it didn't work out. I'm curious as to the percentage of guys drafted in the 5th round or later actually make it to the vaunted "second contract"?

Based on what I was just told, Norton and McIntosh will inform Miami coaches tomorrow that they are headed to the draft.

Damb...all kinds of bad to lose both of them to the draft. D-Tackle is looking shaky depth wise heading into next year...

If Carson or Briggs don't come we have 4 deep ad DT and one of those is a true freshmen, I love the optimism but our depth there is horrible and even Stevie Wonder can see that. Taking one d-tackle last year and one so far this year is going to bite us in the end because we were always dependent on one of the big boys coming back.

Just think if Willis had played this year, we'd be in a even bigger hole at DT. I love Coach Kool but his recruiting at that position has been lack luster thus far. I understand not taking just anyone but to put all your chips on the table that one or both came back for '18 was playing with fools gold.

Mike Jackson shouldn't come back. Yes he got picks (even though 2 were thrown right at him) but his coverage was average. He should go while the going is hot. I don't think he has half the season he had this year. This is his best year to get drafted. Depending on how NSD shapes up he won't play as much as he did this year IMO.
This

hes right

Noooo. What you're witnessing is player development. This was Jackson's first year playing meaningful minutes. He actually performed way beyond what the majority of people here expected, which probably has you all thinking he should jump now. If he continues to work hard and get better with technique and reading defenses, he'll help us next season and make a lot more money for himself going forward. We need quality depth. Don't assume a kid who has shown that he can get better has maximized his talent. And don't assume that the first year players are going to beat him out. They might, but we get better in their attempt. And, the God given talent he has isn't going anywhere, so if it's his 40 time you're thinking will impress, and it should for his size a CB, he'll have that at the end of next season. Not that this has stopped our guys from leaving in the past, but Jackson still has room for improvement and growth.

3rd round money is good. If either one of them slide past 5th then alot of regret will come. Sucks for Miami but it's the nature of the beast.

Willis
Ford
Bethel
Silvera
Carson or briggs?
Will be enough in the regular season

Willis - 14 total appearances in 4 seasons since high school, and not because he isn't talented. Nobody should be counting on him at this point
Ford - young, inexperienced, under developed for the role people are expecting him to step into
Bethel - under sized, under productive, not a true DT, is going to get man handled by high level interior lineman
Silvera - not even on the roster yet
Carson or briggs - not even on the roster yet

Absolutely unacceptable and troubling going into year 3. This isn't a story about Norton and McIntosh. It's about an abject recruiting failure.

They need to consider getting Djax up to around 275 and moving him inside, especially coming off a knee injury.

Gonna need to get creative.

How Doherty, or whoever the recruiting coordinator/roster manager has a job at this point is absolutely baffling.

How someone thought bringing back a member of Golden's staff was a good idea, arguably just as baffling.

Tim Settle from Vt just declared early, he has been flying up draft boards. He is another one that will get drafted over RJ and norton.
