DT & DE Portal Targets?

Here is a list of TE that fit the criteria:
  • Michael Trigg: Joined Ole Miss as part of the prominent 2022 transfer/recruiting influx before finishing his career at Baylor; signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
  • Miles Kitselman: Enrolled at Alabama as a late-spring addition to their 2022 signing class out of junior college before transferring to Tennessee; signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
  • Tyler Moore: Part of Iowa State's 2022 roster class, earning regular Academic All-Big 12 honors through his multi-year career; signed an undrafted free agent opportunity following the 2026 draft. [1, 2, 3]
  • Jack Velling (Oregon st -> Mich St)
  • Hayden Large: An unranked addition who worked his way into the 2022 college football season landscape. He finished his collegiate career at Iowa before signing with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent.
    Jerand Bradley: A versatile athlete who initially entered college football as an elite 2021/2022 cycle recruit, spending time at Texas Tech before transferring to Kansas State. He functioned as a hybrid wide receiver/tight end before signing with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent. [1]

None of these guys entered the portal beforehand and will only be able to return to current school and some may not be eligible via injunction because age part of 5x5 rule was not enjoined meaning anyone above the age of 20 for the 5th year is not eligible

Redshirt Junior, former GTech player out of Westlake (Atlanta).

Probably could declare at the end of the season, but someone to keep an eye on throughout the year for potential Portal DT add.

Tommy’s cousin. Good thing we still have a steady relationship with his uncle-agent who represents AJ Randle. We may need to get on this before Ole Miss or Notre Dame does. Would have two years of eligibility too.

Went to Bergen Catholic. Redshirt sophomore who spent his redshirt year @ WVU then attended Southern Miss afterwards. 4.5 TFL and 3.5 sacks thru 3.

I’d only take a talented guy who would only have been there for a year; I’d be out a dude who’s been there without much to show for it like former blue-chipper Aydin Breland who’s in his third year right now.

Speaking of guys who haven't shown much, former Miami recruit Aydin breland has barely sniffed the field there - now in his 3rd year.

Elijah Rushing (also in his 3rd year) probably going to start next year.

But, any DL with Bear Alexander in it as a premium guy is gonna struggle.

Yeah i was surprised (still am) at how little impact those dudes made. What’s worse is that we are somehow overstating how close to zero impact Breland has made; Oregon’s depth got hit hard in the offseason.

IDL transferred out to Houston, Notre Dame, Arkansas, Cal-Berkeley, Alabama. One edge went to WVU and the other went to Ole Miss. Virtually all of those dudes are all playing this year too. Blake Purchase (Ole Miss), Tionne Grey (ND), Terrance Green (Bama), Jericho Johnson (Cal), and Ashton Porter (Houston) in particular. So Breland (and to a much lesser extent Rushing) would’ve been buried underground depth chart wise.

Goes back to Mario always says about not necessarily stacking talent yeet having individualized outlooks for each guy based on their own abilities and attributes; so the human being can step up when ready post-development. Gotta maintain a strong culture for that to occur; and gotta keep playing a lot of dudes every game like we do.

I don’t believe it’s a recipe for success to bring in 30 transfers (Oregon brought in 15) to replace the 30+1, (true freshman EE transferred to UGA after Raiola + his little true freshman brother signed) outgoing, however, you better have a lot of confidence in your true freshmen and true sophomore classes if that’s happening. Seems like Oregon was caught off-guard.

One of their higher rated transfers was a DT from Orlando who signed with UF and played a lot at UNC last year. Only two games in, and it’s apparent UNC upgraded with his absence as true sophomore Xavier Lewis who was a preferred walk-on. I’m always amazed at how time and time again stories like Lewis, Mestemaker, Chambliss, Feliciano, Stetson Bennett, the Oregon state true WR from St Frances Academy, Anez Cooper, and so forth keep on popping up.

I’m weary that we don’t have a high-end DT from the ‘26 or ‘27 classes, but seeing a guy like Lewis at UNC makes me believe in patience + trusting DL+JT’s evals & development for a guy or two to emerge. (But I’d still take Tank Jones lol)

Yeah I agree.

The goal is to find that sweet spot. You take a guy like Jackson Cantwell, but also a lower rated tackle, not sure if Ervin fits the bill cause he climbed but originally he was sort of nobody.
The challenge these past few years has been the coaching staff here at Miami has done a lot of measurable takes with not much to show for it the past two or three years and relying on coaching and development, which hasn't exactly panned out. These past two years they've really attacked higher rated players, like Woodrow, Buchanon, Congdon and I'm referring to four stars or more.
We had transfer outs like Kinsler and Plazz, so the depth took a hit, but with the transfer portal is tough to grow depth, you almost HAVE to do rough diamond finds. Those two guya here and you're looking better this year, since Kinsler would start and Plazz would be somewhere between 5-8 best on the OLine.

There’s also a roster building side though. Kinsler wanted to be a starting RT and Ole Miss offered him a gigantic bag. Kinsler contributed for us last year, so that’s a hit. We wanted him back. He honestly probably more worried about Cantwell than McCoy. But we didn’t burn the bridges lol I want his cousin here instead of Ole Miss.

Plazz is playing at Auburn but I’m fine with him moving on.
