The defense was horrible, but the ST made it worse for them. It directly contributed to 21pts. which also effected how we approached offensively.

So, defense was on the field almost the entire 1st qt. And we were down 21-7 after finishing my 1st beer of the game.

Just saying...

We actually blocked well on returns. No idea how Coley let a punter knock the ball loose. Burns was carrying the ball like a loaf of bread.

But yes, those 2 fumbles were huge, especially Coleys. We go up 2 scores and that is a different game. That said we still run the same D so we would have still given up a ton of points. We actually forced 2 punts on their 1st 2 drives which is a miracle.

**** it, blame it on the rain.

But the D is allowed to stop someone when we turn it over at mid field and not give up 7 every time

Exactly. With the exception of the bad snap, the other turnovers were on VT's side of the field and the defense let them march down the field on them.

Completely agree. That said, it's hard for the D to not get a breather basically the entire 1st qtr.

No excuses just looking at it at all angles.

Fire Dorito!

Blame who ever you want but it was a complete team loss

Some people don't get this. They think one facet of the team deserves more blame than the other. The entire product is ****, and for the entire season.

Al Golden coaches our special teams.

Ok. And what would you like him to do differently? See this is what I was trying to say last night. It was just a disaster of bad luck. Coley is a true Frosh that made a true Frosh mistake. Ran straight into the punter whose helmet knocked the wet ball loose. Hurns has been a SOLID senior who I cant remember the last time he put the ball on the ground. and yet he did. ODonnell got a low snap, and went too low and his knee hit the ground.

There is NOTHING a coach can do to "correct" those types of mistakes. Because they arent schematic, or coaching issues. They were mental mistakes by players, and just bad breaks. ODonnell is a FIFTH year senior. He's been a BEAST all year, and he made ONE mistake, ONE little mistake, which pretty much resulted in a blocked punt as they ended up with the ball in our red zone. Just handed them an easy score right there.

And the back to back turnovers by Hurns and Coley were simply momentum killers, and really gassed the Defense. I mean they were basically on the field for the ENTIRE 1st quarter without a break. That's no excuse for their horrible play, but it just made things worse.

Bottom line is, this wasnt a "special teams" coaching issue. This was 3 horrible bad breaks by guys who KNOW better, at least 2 of them.

Even though coley and Burns fumbled the ball on STs, those 2 times the defense still shouldve been able to stop VT from scoring 2 TDs.... the turnovers were bad but the defense is still mostly to blame.

The only TD i didnt blame the defense for was the one that came after the punting fiasco which put VT in the redzone from the start. Other then that every TD before and after was 100% D'onofrio's fault.

people can blame the defense all they want (because they were in fact miserable). But if Coley, Burns, and O'Donnell don't have those Turnovers, we win last night

i just think that Coley and Burn's 2 fumbles shouldnt have led to automatic TDs

I agree, and most of the meltdown today is averted. BUt the problems on Defense cant be overlooked anymore. Our players look lost out there. There are deeper problems here than just running a 3-4.

Not sure how you can say that so definitively. Their offense ran all over us all night; they converted 3d downs at a ridiculous rate; and Thomas looked like a Heisman candidate. With or without those turnovers, it's hard to imagine how we would have stopped VT's offense

we wouldnt have, 549 yards had nothing to do w/ those turnovers.
