In Venables last year at Oklahoma his defense gave up 41 to Texas Tech, 45 to Baylor, and 44 to Oklahoma State. They were were the 22nd, 4th, and 2nd ranked offenses respectively.

In 2019, which is the season where fans say its obvious that Brown was in decline, Brown's D gave up 14 to ND, 56 to OSU, and 35 to Bama, which were the 13th, 3rd, and 2nd ranked offenses. This is in the spread era where sneezing on offensive player draws a flag. Those are better numbers than Venables last season at Oklahoma.

I am just waiting for Miami fans to say that Venables was a garbage hire. Fortunately for Clemson, Dabo is smarter than most Miami fans and he saw that a DC with almost a decade worth of success at a P5, but whose defense had declined, was worth the risk. Brown turned around the defenses at two P5s and then had one of the top defenses in CFB in 3 of his 5 years at Michigan.

If I'm in Manny Diaz's shoes and I'm looking at a 2 year window that could spell the end of my coaching career if I don't have success, I'd rather put my fate in the hands of a proven, established P5 DC whose stock is down than a hotshot G5 DC whose school did not play a single P5 program. Once I get some breathing room with some back to back 10 win seasons, I can go for the high-risk high reward G5 young buck from the Mountain-**** Conference.
 
If we hire a DC that isnt on the young side anymore, we have to make sure that we have the assistants ready for a possible DC job.

Hiring Brown is a crapshoot.

Hiring (pick any name) is a crapshoot.

Retaining Baker is a crapshoot.

Firing Baker is a crapshoot.

That’s why this shlt never gets me torqued up.

The guy with the most skin in the game is Manny, and I think he sends Baker packing after the bowl game because he’s smart enough to realize his odds are greater for success with someone else. Of course that’s just me guessing his state of mind as a manager/leader/survivor.

Either way, he’s the one with the most to gain or lose, it’s his ***, it should be his decision. This is as it should be.
 
Bud Foster was a top DC with a top scheme until he wasn’t anymore. If Baker gets canned, whoever they hire better be willing to change and update his system because we’ve seen how fast the game changes. What worked a few years now has counters.

I would love Don as our DC he had top 25 defenses 4 out of 5 years one being 2nd in 2016. He would be a MASSIVE upgrade to our bartender of a DC rn
 
My brother in law is a Michigan grad and diehard. Program is in absolute disarray. They want to give Harbaugh an extension with a low buyout but also wouldn't be upset if he balked at the extension and went back to the NFL, which is still possible.

Assuming he stays on, I'd expect Derek Mason to be the DC hire given the Harbaugh connections at Stanford. Oh, and if you were frustrated by Blake's inability to recruit, Don Brown's geriatric *** recruiting South Florida surely isn't the answer.

Idc for Don Brown, but if you can recruit then you can recruit. Don Brown was the primary for Anthony Solomon and played a role in getting Hood and McBurrows up there and has recruited SoFla plenty over the years along with the rest of FL. He would be fine.

You're missing my point. It's not that you MUST find the next Joe Brady; its that you need to try to find an up-and-comer and someone who's shown it can adjust to the modern offenses in the college game, not simply turning back to the old guard who've shown that they can't.

OSU recruits and develops at a BAMA level. WE’D give up 118 points against them if we played them twice.
