It’s the off season, so I figured we should b.s a little on this thread.

Every off season I watch our glory days on YouTube, just to make sure I don’t make up nostalgia in my head.

We know the 2002 team got robbed of back to back titles; however, question for the board. Let’s say that 2002 team won the national title that year, what do you think the domino effect would’ve been as far as the long term health of the program?

I'm not sure it would have changed much, Coker shafted the program. We were still recruiting at a high level but we never performed to expectations. I always like to wonder what if the 2008 class lived up to expectations? That seemed like a real turning point.

Shannon couldnt coach, manage a roster , or assemble a good staff. Wouldnt have mattered if we signed the whole 2001 team he probably wouldve put half of them in his "dog house"

Yeah but what if right? I mean that 2008 class just by rankings alone was ridiculous. All the top players from the #1 HS in the country and then some. What could have been...

If Butch was still there in 2002, would the game have even been that close? Also, if he stayed, would we have seen the carousel in AD's? Shoulda, coulda, woulda!

I feel Coker would’ve been given the Morris treatment had he won back to back. He may have left on his own, but I think the AD would’ve been very lenient w/ his tenure

2002 was the 2nd year since Butch had left us without a doubt things would have been different had he stayed.
BUT After winning the Championship in 2001, that 2002 last minute Robbery took a lot out of us.

It certainly ruined our feeling of invincibility

Still in 2003 we went 11-2 and finished 5th in the AP and beat FSU a second time in the Orange Bowl,
  • 9-3 in 2004 beating UF 27-10 in the Peach,
  • 9-3 in 2005 losing to LSU 40-3 in the Peach,
  • before falling to 7-6 in 2006
We were still relevant until we were thrashed by LSU 40-3. That is the loss that sent us into a death spiral ....and to this day its still one of the lowest feelings I've EVER had as a Cane

Ya i dont remember if streeter was exactly 2008 but always thought he coulda been a beast if he stayed 1 more year.
Yup. Look at cager. Some of these tall lanky receivers neeed to bulk up before They leave. Not too many teams in the nfl with a lot of patience to develop you for 2-3 years. Cager might work himself into an early round pick. Not too many Mosses out there.

Ruined his career by seeing the short sighted money. Could've had an All-American level season if he returned

I think had Miami won in 2002, everything would still have ended up the way it did.

I think if Butch Davis had stayed on, the run might have lasted a bit longer but eventually some NFL team was going to pay him more than Miami was willing to pay anybody at the time.

I think, in a sad way, Miami needed the Shannon and Golden years to teach them that in modern college football, you get what you pay for. Who knows what bargain basement coach Miami would have hired after Butch Davis left. Maybe Greg Schiano? Maybe Randy Shannon? Whoever it would be it would certainly be a dude who was willing to work cheap.

Schiano would have been a good pick. He did an incredible job at Rutgers, almost making it nationally relevant. Look at what happened to Rutgers after he left. He failed in the pros but so did Butch, Saban, etc...Never understood the hatred for him on this board...

I sometimes wonder who was truly the worst/most destructive of Coker, Shannon, and Golden. They all damaged the program in their own special way. If only Butch had stayed....
