Awesome play. Unfortunately I was watching alongside a friend and fellow Canes fan who had a teaser on Patriots -1.5. So I couldn't celebrate as much as I otherwise would have. He was understandably stunned.
Passive deserves to lose. Nobody on the Patriots attacked that play other than Kyle Van Noy. Once he missed the tackle at the sideline everyone else retreated or wandered or stumbled.
Amazing that having exactly one time out benefitted the Dolphins after the deep pass interference. Any other number and they probably lose. Zero time outs and the Patriots can kneel three times and run out the clock. With 2 or 3 time outs then there's too much time for Miami so Brady will try to score a touchdown, and likely succeed. But at exactly one time out New England played it cautiously, knowing the math worked out to Miami getting the ball with only 15 or 20 seconds left.
The Patriots also could have run a fourth down play instead of kicking the field goal. That would be somewhat risky up only 2, but it pins Miami inside the 5 yard line instead of the squib kickoff and eventually the 31 yard line.
The scoreboard loves Adam Gase. Miami's record is remarkable in close games since he has been the head coach, and with one bizarre 4th quarter rally or save after another. Even last week if Buffalo catches the touchdown pass to Charles Clay there was nearly a minute remaining, and plenty of time for another patented Gase miracle at home.
