We are beginning to see the implosion of College Football. Once the B1G completely turns against the $EC, it’s cooked.
Brief history lesson for context. Once upon a time, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates worked together. Then they didn’t. Gates did Microsoft. Jobs did this company called Apple. Apple was on the verge on pulling the plug and Jobs needed money. In stepped Gates, who could’ve smiled and let Apple die on the vine. Instead, he knew Microsoft would eventually get split up à la AT&T via Sherman AntiTrust. So Gates lent Apple the money and the rest is history. Gates knew he needed a rival.
I don’t think the $EC folks are that smart. I think the $EC believes there is an unlimited pile of cash waiting for them if they can corner the market. In the short term, they might be right. In the long term, it’ll turn into regionalized crapfests as more and more fans tune out. Ask yourselves this question - if the ACC and Miami by extension were to be continuously shut out of the playoffs in favor of three loss $EC teams, how long before you either stop watching all $EC games out of protest or stop watching CFB altogether? From my own experience, I can say during the Manny years, I felt myself drifting away from CFB in large part because our seasons were generally rendered meaningless by mid October and also because, well you guys know.
I don’t want the government intervening to fix this, but I’m also not confident the current college powers are capable. Don’t mean to sound alarmist or negative. It’s the blatant GD cheating (let’s call it what it is) that these MFing $EC schools continue doing that drives me nuts.
The SEC needs to actually do something in the playoff as well. They have another dud year and that bias/shine will start to wear off. If they do have another bad playoff, the other conferences' reps need to drill that home.
I was about ready to give up on Miami during the Manny years. Not that I would never watch or care but why follow a program that is looking like it will just disappoint and have no relevance moving forward? I had just done this for the past two decades and was loosing steam.
Which brings us to what you started on, SEC dominance isnt good for the sport. If Im in Illinois or California or Pennsylvania, I dont ******* care about Alabama, Georgia or any of those southern states. Having half the playoff that regionally concentrated is bad for business. You are flirting with alienating veiwership.
