You just wanna complain about something. If he rips ‘em a new asshœle, you would bltch, if he tells them they’re just ok, you would bltch.

Let me clue you in a little secret, it really doesn’t matter what he says to the press, it’s not gonna make any difference come game time.

It’s going to take a minor (major) miracle for Miami to beat Alabama, just based on their talent differential and massive operation and coaching. But whether Miami wins or loses, it won’t be because of some meaningless coachspeak uttered to the press a week before the game.

You could be right. I don't complain about much TBH. I'll be the first to admit that Manopla has made a lot of good if not great decisions and that he has improved the overall state of the program.

But I do get peeved when the team is overconfident and goes out and gets stomped. We've seen the team look shell-shocked too many times, and that speaks to the general psychological state of the team. And I would further add that our school in particular, given our storied history, is particularly susceptible to this underserved confidence (even the fanbase suffers from this).

So that's my major gripe with Mandy. Listen to any champion-caliber coach in any sport and they all stress the importance of the team staying even-keeled at all times, so that when the storm comes--and it always does--the team isn't so overwhelmed and paralyzed by the challenge.

Given the above, when I see the mind-blowing stats that were released today--against the B team, mind you--i do question the wisdom behind that decision. These kids are all now gonna get metaphorical handjobs from all their family, friends, media outlets, social media, the fanbase, and there is a slight chance that it will contribute to the collective overconfidence of the team, a problem that has plagued this team in the past and one that could make a difference in a close game.

Manopla? That must be some kind of a weird spellchecker you have.

But back to the point at hand. No chance they are overconfident. No chance at all. Nobody is that dumb.

In fact, it’s more likely that they themselves have major doubts and don’t think they have a chance. You don’t think they read what other people have to say? You don’t think they know the point spread? You don’t think they realize that most everybody else is saying they have no chance? What do you think is more likely? That they’re overconfident or thinking they have no chance? In which case, maybe a little shot of bravado is required.

Either way, it’s going to end up that the better team wins.

Well said and well argued. Hopefully you're right and hopefully it's Bama's young O getting shell-shocked and not us. I think we can win. If this were a best of 3 or best of 5, then our chances would be less than nil (as it is they're pretty much nil). But i think it's possible to steal 1 game from Saban. Would take a miracle like you said, but we could have a perfect storm set of circumstances brewing in our favor (i.e., for Bama, a new, young, unproven O, new OC, unproven secondary vs. a lot of veterans on our side, some solid transfers, solid coaching upgrades on D, and a hungrier and more focused than ever D'eriq King (assuming he's truly 100% healthy and hasn't lost any of his shiftiness)). I wish the game were tomorrow! It's gonna be a crazy week of anticipation! Can't wait! GO CANES!

You’re a gentleman. I appreciate the civil discourse.

I can’t say I’m approaching the game, from a fan’s viewpoint, with lofty expectations. It’s impossible for me to ignore the talent disparity well into the three deep.

I can’t ignore the coaching disparity either, this is not meant as a slam on Manny, I think he’s done a good job in bringing in coaches with better credentials this off-season, as well as having a godfather on defense (Shoop) whispering in his ear, but one HC is arguably one of the best CFB coaches of all time, the other is still basically a rook.

Finally, there is virtually no comparison between the logistical support that Alabama has versus Miami. You can never discount the richness of the organization with its army of analysts, interns, and bottomless financial resources all adding to a much stronger infrastructure and logistical advantage.

So I am not approaching this game with my eyes closed. It will be a monumental task for Miami to even stay in the game.

Especially if Saban comes out for blood, which I think he will, the last thing he wants is a Miami turning things around and making it harder for him to have his choice of South Florida’s premier athletes.

I think Saban wants to demolish Miami and embarrass Miami so that there’s no question when it becomes a possible choice for an athlete.

I recognize this was 1's v 2's. My only point is that we should not draw an inference from any of this, and should not ask, as the OP did, 'does this mean the defense sucks'? Maybe he was just being facetious but others will take the stats far too seriously and draw actual conclusions which will resurface after the Bama game.

All great points. And I totally understand and share some of your reservations. That's what it's like to be a Canes fan in today's era, unfortunately. Remember how D$ began his podcast from last year (or was it the year before?), "I'm not gonna do it!" As in, I'm not going to fully commit to believing this team has what it takes to have a special season (or even win the ACC). I think any rational Canes fan who has been around for the last 15-20 years shares that sentiment. There's an uneasiness that comes with being a Canes fan and believing in this team. We've been hoodwinked too many times.

Who in their right mind would pick Miami to win? I mean, has Saban ever lost a season opener? Those mofos know how to show up on game 1. And they not only win, they've crushed plenty of contenders and ruined their seasons from the gate.

But there is reason for hope, the biggest one being D'eriq King. Who has Bama lost to in the past few years? Heisman winners or Heisman candidates. Johnny Manziel. Burrough. Cam Newton. Trevor Lawrence. D'eriq King is as motivated if not more motivated in winning this game as Saban is in crushing us and our rookie corch. I've said it before on this forum, D'eriq King should really only have one goal this season, and that's winning the Heisman. He's not a viable NFL prospect, at least not at the QB position. He might have a shot as a receiver or maybe a returner, but i wouldn't bet on him having a long or productive career, or even starting, or even being on a roster. He'd be a great practice squad QB, the guy who immitates the opposing team's QB every week. But that's pretty much the ceiling for him in the NFL, especially if he has a less-than-spectacular 2021 campaign.

His best shot at a long a meaningful career in broadcasting perhaps, or maybe in business, or maybe even the NFL, or all of the above, is to win the Heisman or at least have a Heisman-esque season. He wins the Heisman this season, all while bringing back the U, and the guy will be immortal. He can ride on that for the rest of his life. By now, i think he's figured that out and is ready to leave it all on the field this season, starting on Saturday. He is the main reason we have a shot on Saturday, and the reason I'm daring to take a few sips of that deadly kool aid that has knocked so many of us down on our a$$es in years past.
