Does this mean SEC leaving the NCAA?

They can't leave em out due to anti-trust laws.
If 50 separate schools pay exit fees to their existing conferences and opt to create their own conference, how does that break anti-trust law? Seems like a free market to me.

Now, I could see it getting pretty sticky as far as doing such a thing and expecting to continue to get Federal funding (even though that is a pittance) or continuing on with non-profit status.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen either. Unless the conferences and schools realize it is their car to drive and not the TV networks', this will be a possibility.

I can't think of another sport in such a situation where the TV networks have this much power.
TV is the money supplier. Without TV, none of this matters and there’s no money for anyone.

With all due respect, this is selling the product extremely short. You think TV leaves if college football doesn't acquiesce to every whim and fancy that TV wants? College football is the #2 most watched sport in the US. They aren't leaving because Rutgers and Maryland remain in the B1G.

TV is a partner, not a decision maker or task master. They only care about the immediate TV ratings. The powers that be in college football need to realize they should do what is best for the long-term success of the sport, instead of what's best for individual conferences.

IMO, the P4 needs come together and get a commissioner. Hash out rules for the portal, NIL, standardize scheduling, negotiate TV deals as one entity (the P4), recognize players as employees with a CBA, and get closure on any other issues affecting the sport today. With standardized scheduling, there will be more high quality P4 OOC games to satisfy their TV partners.

Too bad it won't happen.

You totally missed the entire point.

The point is that TV supplies almost all the money that goes to college football programs. You even said it’s the #2 most watched sport. TV money is the only thing behind all the conference realignment we’ve had over the last 20 years. TV money says “jump” and college programs say “to what conference?”. Traditions, rivalries and location mean nothing compared to getting a bigger TV payout. If the biggest networks decided to put together a huge money package to essentially buy the top 50 programs out of the NCAA and do their own thing, every single school would jump. Why fight over conference broadcast rights when you don’t even want to broadcast have the teams in the conference? Just buy out the elite programs that people actually watch and ONLY pay to broadcast their games

That's why I agreed with you that it COULD happen. Individual schools are looking out for themselves.

I just think it is extremely short-sighted in what they are doing and would eventually whittle away at the sport's overall popularity. No one is looking at 10 years, 20 years down the road, just the short-term.

The schools actually have much more power as a whole instead of being split individually. Like you said, the TV networks say "jump" and the schools say "how high?". It could be the other way around if handled properly.

lol. This is America. Anti-trust laws don’t matter if you pay the right people enough money.
not a single law matters. Con Law was a waste of a semester because none of it means ****. turns out the law only works if you work in good faith. otherwise its a mere suggestion

SEC is a They talk about other conferences weak schedule but they actively cancel out of conference games. We were supposed to play SCAR and there’s been plenty more SEC cancellations due to their “tough” schedule.

“I’ve said this for a long time to our president, I’ve been a huge advocate that if we can’t find rules that everybody plays by, then we should play on our own,” Smart told reporters. “I’m not afraid of that. I’m not afraid to break away and say that our conference is strong enough to go out and play.”

Georgia coach Kirby Smart said his biggest concern with eliminating the SEC championship game would be lost revenue -- an estimated $80 million to $100 million, according to sources.

"I don't think it's great for the transfer portal to be ending the season that late, and if that championship game is in the way of that, or gets put on the back burner because of that, I think you'd have to accept it," Smart said. "But I'm really more worried about the financial burden that we're under right now of paying for all of the athletic department. And when you take that revenue stream [from the SEC championship game] out, can we make it work, and that is it sustainable to do without it? Would be my biggest concern."

Smart was among a number of SEC coaches to bemoan the massive uptick in spending from revenue sharing and NIL, and he suggested, if trends continue, that the ballooning football budgets will put all Olympic-level sports in peril.

"My biggest concern for our sport is we're going to ruin all the other sports," Smart said Tuesday. "People say, well, that's just the way it is. I don't agree with that. We fund Olympic sports at our program and we go to class with [other athletes]. You learn culture by being around those people. But that's why we're talking about student-athletes, which most of you all would argue that there is no student in the athlete. I still think the best thing is to get a degree while also training to be a professional athlete. We're going to lose that if we keep spending because not everybody can spend at the rate we're spending."

“If we could actually function financially, it would make our programs more stable. We could support things financially. I’m talking about all the sports and do our own rules – I’d be all for that.”

“The fact that we’re talking about our own rules isn’t anything new,” SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said on Monday night. “What you’re hearing is the expression of frustration about the lack of progress, and I’ll go back to March 6. I was in the White House, and I spoke about the need for national standards. We still believe we need national standards. If those can’t be achieved, then we’ll have to look at more conference-led regulation, but that’s the reality we’re facing.”
Doesn’t even make to me what in the world those would look like or how that would work in totality. If Louisville tampers and breaks a rule to get a SEC player, what next? You’re going to ban Kentucky from playing them?

Paper Tiger Conference. His words are weightless when we know nothing will be achieved Congressionally.

I wish they would. F them. We will compete against each other whole they go F themselves.

Imagine having no control over your players to where they’re consistently getting arrested without actual repercussions (including homicide and numerous possession charges), building your name off openly cheating while nobody else could, then playing the victim when it becomes legal.

As someone that’s spent many years surrounded by UGA fans, this plays to their fanbase. They legitimately do not believe UGA were the biggest cheaters in CFB. I have 4 UGA alumni in my family. I ranted for 45 minutes at Thanksgiving about how UGA is soft, the SEC is soft, that no SEC team had the ability to win it all, and that if Miami made the playoff then they’d have a better chance to win it than any SEC team. They laughed in my face and haven’t brought it up since.

Could you bring a camera crew to this year's Thanksgiving dinner? I'm thinking new reality TV hit show.
