JJ was hired and his first season was gloom and doom, same with Erickson and Butch. The only hire that was not scrutinized to the Max was Howard because we had no expectations until he won our first MNC. Having been through that I recognize that Diaz IS addressing our weaknesses and it takes some time. JJ needed to change his staff before he became the awesome coach we admire, Erickson was too WHITE to deal with inner city toughs, Davis was a retread and his offense sucked under OC Coker and everyone was incredulou when Coker became HC and he won because the players ran the team as he observed.
Our flaws are numerous and it takes time, especially when your FG kicker from last year becomes a head case and the OL can't block the sorry teams we played and an ELITE OC is a total bust. On top of all that Diaz could easily have been one of the more successful hires his first year via a few field goals or a lost fumble with all our issues. We are better off exposing our problems so they WILL BE addressed. Fla loss, 4 points and we gifted them 2 missed FG's and a fumble at the 5, NC 3 points and we gave up a 4th down, VT 7 pts and INT's killed us as did the GT game, then our team quit on us....need I go on.
I know we shoulds beat everybody by 21 points but there is a lot of parity in college football and games will continue to be close unless we have an overwhelming talent advantage like LSU, but LSU was behind Alabama for years and had to build a team to compete. Our aim is to build an ACC winner which includes Clemson and defensively we can harass QB's, Clemson's strength. It takes time, effort, talent, coaching and LUCK and we have been very unlucky.
By the way, 3 portal QB's are in the playoffs, one won the Heisman yet our portal guy never got one legitimate shot, who knows what could've been? We expected to get Hurts per our sorry OC, not Martell.

I read JJ and knew the rest of this was regurgitated “he went 8-5 his first year” comparison bull****. It’s like people who use this forget JJ was implementing a brand new defensive system with players and a program he was just getting familiar with (unlike Mandy who has been with the program since 2016) and the defense struggled mightily the first year because of it. It’s not the same thing at all and there is no excuse for Manny having this job let alone the results that followed..........enough already!

Not only that but he had to retain Tom Olividipsh!t who fought him at every turn.

Erickson's won an NC his first year didn't he? I get Butch comparison but he was dealing with probation and reduced scholarships. JJ first year was rough but he cleaned house following year and rest is history. I actually thought Coker was a decent OC.

Erickson won an NC in his first season? :youre-nuts:

But Jimmy I will give you. No doubt the CIS jeanyes’ would have been calling for Jmmy’s head after season 1.

Losing to FIU and LaTech is a downgrade from Richt. Richt left him a team that could beat those teams easily, so that's on Manny. That's not talent level or "the culture", it's bad coaching. It's not getting your guys up to play. It's having a bad game plan. Or it's having a good game plan but being unable to get your players to execute it. The season was asss for a number of reasons, but those two games in particular are about coaching.

Oh, and we lost every game after the team had time off, that's coaching as well.

And this is why the U administration con game has gone on for so long! Does this guy know anything about football? REally give Manny Diaz a chance. A chance to do what? And if he somehow wins 7 games he will not be fired! He has done absolutely nothing to give anyone hope in his ability to coach a collegiate football team. Its part of the reason he was hired without a coaching search. Yeah Blake may have kinda wanted to win but there was no indication that Diaz was qualified.
He got nothing right. Motivator? NO, X and O's? No. In game coach? No. Preparing his team for the next opponent? No. Getting his coordinators to do what he said he wants? No. Evaluator of talent? No. Evaluator of coaching talent? No. Control of the locker room? No. Recruiter? No. And this is a big one considering what happened on the field this year he does not have the ability to teach football IQ. His team may have been the dumbest (I mean football IQ) team ever fielded in the college game. Even the qb's lack football IQ. There is absolutely nothing that he has done to show he has the ability to coach college football. He is officially the worst coach in U history, worst than Shanon and Golden and worse than the bad coaches of the late 60's and the 70's considering their teams lack of talent.

Tldr

And I like your posts.

This mentality was OK before Manny sabotaged the Highsmith hiring.

Now, Manny is the enemy.

Overall, I agree with the general premise of your post Fraggle. The team had six wins. We missed chip shot FGs & PATs in 3-4 games that are routine makes with an average scholarship K. The misses were highly unlikely. Just on that basis alone, the team could easily have had 8-9 wins.

Manny has made various mistakes though & does deserve criticism for those. Particularly the OC hire, ST coach, not having a solid Plan B back-up plan for Kicker, and starting freshmen at OT (and leaving them on an island). Blake Baker was also an underwhelming hire. While he's by no means the biggest issue, the Defense looked dramatically different in the first half of the season when it was primarily under Blake's leadership.

Manny made a ton of great moves last offseason. Most fans were bullish coming into the season and then...the offense looked nothing like what he promised and the defense played very passive. Then the Special Teams issues started piling up (muffed punt against UF, conversions of fake punts by opponents, missed chip shot FGs & even a PAT). That together with En@s allegedly p!ss!ng everyone off led to a total thud at the end of the season. Players weren't motivated and didn't want to fight for their offensive leader. It goes to show how ALL THREE PHASES of the game are critically important. While OL play was brutal the first half of the season, it was SPECIAL TEAMS that killed the season. Unquestionably, that was the primary reason the season went downhill fast. Had there been basic competency in SPECIAL TEAMS, I'm sure they would have had a winning record & stayed more motivated.

Let's hope Manny will make a great OC hire and that OC will get the ball out quickly to our best athletes in space. The Defense will be fine next year (likely Top 25) with a nasty DL (especially if Jaelan delivers big time), more speed at LB (albeit significantly less experienced) and a more experienced set of DBs. We cannot have a repeat either on Offense or Special Teams though.

OL recruiting (HS & in the Portal) as well as player development of the OL currently on the roster needs to be a top priority. I hope Feeley can transform Navaughn this offseason the same way he did with Miller (DT). He also needs to work closely with Zion, Jakai & other young OL to really bring them along. I would have the best S&C coaches on staff focus first on development of the OL. They didn't look great as a group last year (maybe #55 is coloring that assessment) but they need to get the most attention of all of the players. We also have to be able to run for 1-2 yards consistently on 3rd down & make it (Enos didn't even try to do that). Strengthening the OL considerably should be the #1 focus after bringing the right OC on board. Developing the QBs (especially TVD) should be another major priority.

With respect to your comments on prior coaches:

Erickson had issues & left the program a mess but did win 2 MNCs. He's a great offensive mind & very good game day coach. You can criticize him for plenty of others things but he's on a very short list of coaches that have won 2 MNCs.

Love him or hate him, the job Butch did resurrecting the program out of the ashes of a nasty probation was SPECTACULAR. To assemble the greatest roster of talent ever against that backdrop is stunningly good. He wasn't perfect as a game day coach & there were some surprising losses on the ascent back to the top but I would go as far as to say that the resurrection job he did was the best ever in CFB. He had to hit on a super high percentage of his player evaluations, had limited schollies and assembled a roster that had every player but one drafted from the starting 22 in 2001 (the one unfortunately had a car accident). Countless first rounders and a bunch of NFL HOFers. That is an incredible job under dire circumstances.

I agree with all you have to say and it is a legitimate response to my post. This is what I expect from a TEAM's website not all the negativism. I guess the immature must play with their Dad's computer.
I want Diaz to succeed as he is not going away any time soon. There is plenty that needs fixing that we all recognize. Unfortunately once a missed FG happens and you try other kickers that becomes an unexpected problem. Jarren came around, was looking like a star, and then after one bad game never showed us anything, instead of improving as the OL jelled he digressed, who expected that? If Diaz doesn't fix the obvious problems I will call for his resignation or firing. I hope that doesn't happen because that will mean another rebuilding project with another unknown quantity. I am encouraged by the new recruits after such a disastrous season which shows he is getting kids committed to the U. Rome wasn't built in a day and our program has been a disgrace for near 20 years.
