Do we 1997 this thing?

should they lose to a bad Vatech team next week, should Mario and Co go with a full blown youth movement and do what Butch Davis had no choice but to get guys like Santana Moss, Reggie Wayne, Dan Morgan, Bubba Franks, Damione Lewis, Edgerrin James, etc, and take your lumps and build for the future. Yes, you can argue Butch did this out of necessity, but looking at the big picture, it was the right thing to do.

It wasn't always pretty, especially in 1997, but there was a bigger picture. Build for the future. And if you're going to be bad -- be young, at least. By 1998, you could clearly see signs of progress. That this thing was going in the right direction.

Moving forward, starting with a bad Vatech team, I would love to see more of the younger guys who seem to have a higher ceiling(Skinner, Wes B, Chase Smith, Cooper, Nyjalik Kelly, Colbie Young -- who certainly earned more snaps) over the players who have already reached theirs.

If this is a rebuild, I say start now and get the process started, and really hasten this culture change. Also, show recruits that playing the best players isn't just lip service.

Anyways, disappointing loss, I flew out, actually still had a good time in Miami. Hey, nobody said this was going to be easy....
FANTASTIC INSIGHT….SOME PEOPLE JUST NEED TO REALIZE WE’RE NOT ORDERING PIZZA HERE…

Coaches are slow to turn to young'ns.

Increases chances of losing close games.

Nothing to lose here!

There’s a decent probability that it happens. Personally, I think Mario will turn this place around. But like any decent first year HC, there’s going to be some big hurdles. When you’ve only got a combined 3-4 guys on both sides of the ball that would start at other P5 programs, you’ve got a problem.

Its time to open the floodgates and go with that

Butch had absolutely no choice but to do that...what else could he do, down 20 out of 31 schollies by 97?? (Could barely hold a practice that Spring)....and those 6 players you mentioned, we have nothing like them on this team regardless of position. The most important part was his recruiting and evaluating process. THAT was the 2 most important keys...and then of course development.

to me Season is lost. id agree in getting them in and rolling the dice. were losing to teams we shouldn't as it is. job security is there. you could go 3-9 and it wont matter. if we get young guys more reps and more comfortable to step into larger roles next year im good. at least I know we aren't trying to win anymore vs what were doing now
Winning an ACC championship and going 3-9 would do very different things for the program. We don't control our own destiny at this point but it would be foolish to throw the season in the toilet at this point just because we lost to MTSU.

Problem is - guys like Edge, Moss, Wayne, Franks, Morgan - were all starters from Day 1 in 1997 because their talent dictated it.

I'm all for getting Bissainthe, Kelly, young some more snaps - but I'm not expecting them to become NFL pro-bowl players either.

They should have made this adjustment against UNC. Coach can talk about coastal in play or whatever white board message he has written up there but when we strip this football program down to the frame and foundation; there a lot of pieces out of alignment and some that need to be scraped altogether--a warm welcoming-gift to CMC left behind by his predecessors.

We aren't going bowling and a >.500 seems unlikely. No shame in scrapping this season and calling these failures out for what they are. Prioritizing experience for our next class of kids on the field getting reps and strategically preparing for a run next year would be my preference. In fact, I'd have more respect for the current situation if coach would just do it. He doesn't have to say that's what he's doing, just show it by giving everyone equal reps. We'll notice it in the stats.

Not so much about talent alone...we were devoid of any depth, thanks to Ericksons no recruiting ***...and of course sanctions.

I'd say our depth was bad from an overall numbers standpoint, but it was actually good from a talent standpoint. Our backups were all NFL players.

1997 Backups:

QB - Scott Covington (7th RD)
RB - James Jackson (3rd RD)
WR - Daryl Jones (7th RD) Andre King (7th RD)
TE - Mondriel Fulcher (7th RD)

Even though we went 5-6 in 1997, it was a way more talented team than the 9-3 1996 team who started - Yatil Green, Magic Benton, Tony Gaiter, Dyrall McMillan, Danyell Ferguson, Jermaine Chambers

Yatil, Magic and Gaiter were every bit as good as Jones and King...

Ah, the yearly "this is like 1997" thread.
Its been 1997 for 15 straight seasons lol

It depends. Are we playing the best players and trying to adapt or are we playing 80s big 10 football with players that don’t fit it …

That’s not going to help…

Yatil was a beast, and I hate how his NFL career played out with injuries. I totally agree Benton/Gaiter were just as good Jones/King

The difference is Wayne/Moss were so much better than any of those guys - so overall the 97 group was much more talented & deeper by a wide margin.

Leave him be for now & a Smiley face??...That's lame...
You really need to jump in on or be pulled in to a Butch comment for the 1,000,0000th time???

Then what? Someone says something you don’t like about Butch or your relationship with Butch or other players.

Then what? You attack them and they attack you.

Wash rinse repeat.
