Do the Canes need a dedicated QB Coach???? If we have one, what does he do?

It's not just having better personnel. It's about the prep work all week.

I don't remember which NFL game it was recently but there was a fairly long discourse on QBs coming into the league not knowing how to prepare for NFL games. How to prepare for game plans, etc.

My point in sharing this article is the detail work that has gone into preparing Mendoza to execute fully on game day. It's about the physical development of his tools but it's also about the work that needs to be done to fully control the offense on the field.

Dawson has yet to show us a QB he brought in that is ready to lead a team. Why is that? Poor evaluation? Not enough time spent developing them?

It seems to me there is a reason Cignetti has been so successful recently, particularly with this QBs. There's a plan and it seems to be pretty thorough
Stop it, please. Cignetti’s last two QBs were portals, just like Miami. Portal is the way to go with programs built to win now. Rare is the HS QB who is ready to play, see the great Arch Manning. Miami hasn’t gone all in on signing an elite HS QB, and probably won’t going forward. Too risky & impatient.

Mendoza went from Cal with a .500 roster to a 11 win team with 2 really good receivers. Stat wise, not much changed except for TD passes (Sarrat/Cooper have 24 of them I believe). So what developed?

Every team has QB analysts and coaches. All of these QBs work on their own with throwing coaches, strength coaches, etc.

Honestly great for Mendoza but this is a ridiculously bad year for offenses and QBs. If it were last year he would have been 6th-8th for the heisman.

Development is an overused term. Does Hartline “develop” WRs or does he sign 3-4 5*/high 4* and 50% of them get drafted as 1st round picks. We signed a bunch of 3* talent and expect them to “develop” into the next Cam Ward. If there were a coach that does that regularly he’d be making 4-5 million a year as a OC/QB coach.View attachment 348535View attachment 348536View attachment 348537
Look at the new Oklahoma St Head Coach (Morris) if you want a reference for a guy that develops QBs.

It's an absolute super power if you can harness it.

I think Dawson is a middle-of-the-road OC that does just enough not to get in his own way with the talent Cristobal provides him with. He also seems incredibly awkward, so he's kinda stuck at this level - so he provides continuity.

The new Okie coach has been at programs where you had to develop QBs cause couldn’t play the portal game. Name some top programs, who have resources & well-paid OC/QB coaches, who patiently develop QBs. Not many exist. Miami’s success is smartly built around portal QB. Good news is Mario probably sees Dawson as more than middling. Describing him as incredibly awkward is an interesting take.

That write up seems to point to him being more of a play caller, game planner. Not a QB developer.

What does he do with the QBs each week?
“Drisko worked primarily with Quarterbacks. Under his tutelage, signal caller Nick Mullens became the all time career leader in passing yards, touchdowns, and passing attempts at Southern Miss, as well as the record holder for single-season and single-game passing yards in Southern Miss history.

Despite being in his 20s, Drisko had already successfully worked with multiple NFL quarterbacks, so Catholic University decided to bring him on their staff.

In just his second year on the staff he was promoted to offensive coordinator, and the offense greatly improved in 2018 and 2019. Thus earning another promotion to assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.”

Like almost every college football team, our QB coach is our OC.

I’m still skeptical if Dawson can develop a quarterback. His offenses have historically done well when he inherits a starter or has an experienced transfer. The only quarterback he’s ever had to develop was Clayton Tune at Houston.

Look at Clint Trickett's (who was not a good QB) development from year 1 to year 2 under Dawson as OC/QB coach.

Year 1
52.8% completion 1605 yards 7 TD 7 INT

Year 2
67% completion 3,285 yards 18 TD 10 INT

Actually there are a few around. One is Eric Morris from N Texas, now going to Okla St. he is a legendary QB whisperer. Having a hand in developing Mahomes, Mayfield and Cam Ward. Also with still college QB’s Mateer, Chandler Morris and recently Mestemaker. Just sayin’ Hard to figure why people want to give Jason Taylor credit for helping our DLine and DE’s develop, but Pi*s on the idea that we need a QB coach. It’s a head scratcher.

Comparing apples & oranges. DL coach might have 10-12 players he’s working with & has time to wait on backups to physically develop & play in system - note: he’s augmented with portals as well. Some of those developing guys are 4-stars & paid accordingly. OC/QB coach has four - QB1 portal guy & 3 mediocre to decent recruits that hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. Dawson has killed it identifying & training portals in his system. We haven’t hit on a HS QB yet, but also haven’t paid big or recruited elite prospects. *****ing about our QB strategy or plan at this point is silly - No. 1 pick in draft & a guy who has us in playoff quarter finals.

IDK who identified Cam and Beck. Not sure I give all the credit to Dawson. I suspect Mario had a very heavy hand in it

My point in all of this is we do recruit QBs - what happens to them when they get to campus? Who develops them? Who "teaches" them. Cam and Beck came in 95% finished products. They had to learn Dawson's system and draw from their previous experience on the field. We all saw what happened in the pop tarts bowl with Emory last year. Thank god we didn't need any of the backups this year. Nickel and Coleman are thought to be more talented than either Emory or Anderson. Who is going to bring them up to the next step?

for every cam ward less than 3* player who makes it there are hundreds who never play. My point is if all we’re recruiting are low 3* players with low floors and unknown ceilings I don’t think you can judge “development”. Not everyone can turn into Michael Jordan with hard work. Our path is grabbing guys from the portal who fit our offense. Even if we landed 5* QBs out of HS there are plenty of Klubnicks, Lagways, and Mannings out there.

Will be curious to see if Nickle or Coleman end up QB1. If we stay on current path the answer is no. Suspect coaches & fan base won’t have the patience. When you build a team that’s ready to win, it’s difficult to turn it over & deal with growing pains of an inexperienced QB.

Amen Brother, that’s exactly the point, who will bring them to the next level. I Get bringing in developed QB’s, but when they go down who steps up, recruits? The ones we haven’t had the time or inclination to develop? Yeah, then we’re f**ked. How about we bring in someone to work the recruits, just in case, and be a resource for the portal” accomplished “ QB’s. And then maybe that awkward mfer Dawson can fully focus on his game plan. JFC, this is so simple yet made do complicated by the Mopes.
