DL David Stone [commits to Okla] ENUFF

There seems to be portal smoke here. Multiple mentions about Stone and the portal on Geo's last podcast and now Stone posts a pic about the day when he was supposed to pick UM and surprised everyone (including his family) by picking the Sooners.

Could be a troll job by Stone, but its an elaborate one if it is.

Likely a troll job. These kids all love attention.

OP updated as this omission is now relevant. Not just Geo, D$ got blind sided here too.

David Stone

Never really discussed, got interrupted by Mason Thomas discussion.
Edit: topic came up again later in the podcast where viewer asked about Stone and the portal. Geo went into depth about how Miami and all beat reporters were shocked when he picked the Sooners.

Seems like a very strange coincidence that Geo goes into tremendous depth about Stone shocking everyone with the OK pick and then a day later Stone posts that pic.

Assuming you believe in coincidences.

"We're pushing Horton out to get a known commodity/veteran that will be available more often and that we know what we're getting. We can't mess around this year because we're right there" and then go pay a 19 year old with 6 career tackles double the money than we were paying Horton would be the ultimate Miami move. The epitome of this regime thus far if it happens.

(Not saying its bad or I'm against it - just seems like another "shiny toy" move that Mario falls for every single time)

If you look at Mario's timeline and what @DMoney and the Miami resources were saying last year was essentially this, and I'm paraphrasing "Cam Ward moved up the rebuilding timeline to successful now because he is a TALENT, so lets take it and run"

With that being said, that means that this year is the year in Mario's timeline that he expects consistent play and this year was the year of his recruited players, culture , etc will pave the way forward.

There is truth to this, when you look at certain position groups, I.e, OL, DL (it's better then one thinks regarding depth), LB (if you look at composite stars on that group alone), DBs (now that he flipped the room), TE (WAS great, just timeline didn't workout, but still good enough to get an ACC ship), WR (still missing a breakout WR1) and QB (discussed as nauseum that the SOP is to pay for proven commodity, i.e., transfer portal qb, and find gems for development).

This is Mario's timeline, so I'm most excited about this season, because he's built this team from the ground up, and the roster is designed now to be a run reliant team with a QB that works well with TE and play action with enough athleticism and a stronger defense (i.e., Saban Bama blueprint)

The moves he's made recently at DL have been pretty safe and not totally "shiny toy" moves.

CJ Clark, Marley Cook, Branson Deen, Thomas Gore. Even Simeon Barrow was a high floor / low ceiling type player.

Not saying I'm for or against getting a JAG with experience vs former 5 star with no experience but I don't think Mario strictly targets s*xy targets only.

Most of that is budget related. We wanted the Harmon guy that went to Oregon. We wanted Silver that went to USC.

We've fallen in the shiny toy trap with coaches, recruits, portal, etc. over and over.

Stone just seems like Samson - highly rated but not living up to the hype. We're stuck eating the cost on Samson, don't need to do it for Stone too. But I do see the ceiling could be high if he has a big 2nd year jump.

Isn't that our choice? Technically, haven't we approached similar types of NIL deals and offered a lesser deal based on lack of production?

I don’t trust anything posted by any players in Oklahoma when it comes to Miami.

Venables hates Mario. Any player on that team wanting to come here wouldn’t be putting out any smoke signals related to the canes.
Also, has stone done anything to say he is a for sure day one starter and would dominate the acc?
I’m sure he wants a guaranteed starter job. Given his antics he doesn’t look like the guy that wants to come and compete.

He’s negotiating.
