Disappointed

I go to high school football games and go where The U has committed players. I've been going for many years. I remember when St. Thomas played North East in a district playoff game in 1983. North East had 3 players that ended up in the NFL but Michael Irvin destroyed North East, it was a man amongst boys. I enjoyed every minute that Irvin played for the U. Lately things have changed drastically, players I watch and commit come to the U and I anticipate an outcome similar to Irvin's success, but alas the Portal exists and many end up never getting a chance to show what I saw when they played in High School. I have also followed recruiting and February used to be excitement in the off season, seeing who COMMITTED. Now I'm not blaming the players for leaving as I've been told many are asked to leave. I hope TVD wins the Heisman, Jacurri is runner up and Chaney rushes for 2000 yards IF they were asked to leave!

Also the destruction of the ACC is disturbing and seems that fsu being butt hurt has caused turmoil and confusion because no one knows who is going where. Honestly I've thought all along the ACC has become a valid football league with no real weak teams and all the sports that are not football related are super, I think that is why Notre Dame picked the ACC for all those other sports yet they schedule lots of ACC teams for football. They play 4 in 2024. But what matters is where will we end up or will the ACC stay intact? I hope fsu leaves and joins the frigid BIG! I was told that when fsu joined the Big East they were assured they would get a warm weather schedule. Hope they freeze!

Also again is the NIL which requires no added comments as it has made college ball a professional league. Since we seem to have immersed deeply into it will we get our monies worth? 13 million dollars for a freshman QB? by the gator? I wonder how much Arch Manning is getting? Mercenaries are not as much fun as dedicated orange and green bleeding Hurricanes

I've always been for change when it improves a situation, the league turmoil, the NIL and portal are destroying something beautiful!.
The game changed for Miami decades before NIL. There is plenty of blame to go around. But recruiting in So FL changed, Player development, NCAA sanctions (and 30 for 30 kept the program in the crosshairs), the Administration's devaluing of football, Several bad HC and AD hires, Allowing the winning culture to slip away, Seldom living up to expectations, and Recruits heading to winning programs that gave them a better chance at a title, leaving the Canes with the leftovers of So FL, and of course, The Curse of the Orange Bowl.

So far, this team has greatly benefitted from NIL and the portal has been a plus for us. The days of becoming a powerhouse solely via recruiting and bagmen are over and we have adapted better than most.

And then ,yes, players are probably asked to leave to make room for better players . In most cases these players are going to places where they can see the field so in no way do I feel sorry for them. It is a win win for us and the transfer.

I do agree with you on the whole ACC fiasco thing. I believe this can be a strong conference if FSU and Clemson maintain their recent level of play and I am confident UM will be at their level starting this year. Three solid strong teams around the top 10 and the conference is relevant. I think FSU and Clemson fail miserably leaving to a tougher conference and a tougher schedule.

I am in agreement with much of what has been said. This is why I feel that Mario was the right hire at the right time. While many other coaches have complained over and over about the current situation, Mario has been taken advantage of the changes bring together all three factors in building a program, and not just recruiting high school players.

Mario is playing by today’s new rules and guidelines. On paper it appears right now to be helping the program. We won’t know for sure till kick off.

Do I like what college football has become? Definitely not. I too remember watching players who played behind starters giveing us all something to be excited come the following season. Now it’s all bull **** and money. Free agency at the college level, with players holding programs hostage, reneging on their commitments, along with under achieving cause they got $$$$, even if we win it will never be the same.

The real winners in all this are the bookmakers. With government and state approval pandering to all the weaknesses of fans to gamble has and will continue to be an interference of the outcome of games. That’s just a biproduct of todays college sports.

So you went up to Connecticut and Georgia to watch TVD and Jacurri play in high school?

So I was thinking the other day, is gentrification changing the talent in high school football here in soflo? We don't see those fast freaks anymore or are they just going to other schools n not wanting to come to the U anymore?

Probably so, you definitely don't see the number of dogs produced in the last century. And yes, they haven't had a reason to want to go to Miami. Just look at the South Florida players on the top 10 teams over the years, and then consider that Miami hasn't been a Top 10 team very often since the glory days.

I ran a yacht for the guy who owned Dominos Pizza/Det Tigers in the 1980s and early 90s, and Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler was on our BOD. Whenever he was on, he'd come up to the bridge, and we'd chat football. This was when Miami was killing it—all those big-time coaches noticed where the Canes players were coming from. Right after the 1987 title, we were talking about high school ball in Florida. He said to me, "If I had the pick of my state, I'd struggle to win my conference; if I had the pick of Florida, I'd compete for a national title every year."

After that, even teams like Rutgers started holding camps in South Florida. But every major program had recruiters beating the streets like never before. Diminishing returns.

Absolutely gentrification is a factor, good call!
