When Miami built the BUC and the fieldhouse, they demonstrated an objective commitment to basketball. The BUC opened in 2003. Since then both men's' and women's' hoops have reached new heights while moving from the Big East to a more difficult basketball conference. The growth is no coincidence. On the other hand, Donna destroyed the orange bowl in 2007 and our football coach currently makes less than what Larry Coker was making during the 2002 season. I ask, is Donna making less now than she did in 2002? Is any professor? What about staff members? The answer is obviously no. Not surprisingly, the football team has steadily declined. The solution is not a new coach or a practice bubble (what a joke). It is simple take an objective measure that shows a true financial commitment to the program and fund a stadium. Until that step is taken, keep expecting 6 to 9 win seasons to be the norm. Hopefully the new president will have a vision and realize that making a financial commitment to football will actually help the ENTIRE university.

The only difference between the football and basketball teams that matters is this guy:

its coaching, perry clark sucked asss, Jimmy L is the best coach in the 305 regardless of level

If Coach L hadn't sent the retards in the athletic department his wiki page/resume the basketball program would be mired in just as much mediocrity as the football program. The lone solid coach at the University was hired because he contacted the school not the other way around.

There is a systemic lack of interest in sports by the higher ups. They simply lucked into coach L. It would be like Art Briles, Gary Paterson, etc contacting the athletic department asking for the job.

I remind people every chance I get- Fat Tony Hernandez got the blessing to offer Tommy Amaker the job. And the effing Harvard corch turned him down. So not only did Larranaga save our program he also saved face for every ****** involved in the process.

Funny thing is, when coach L contacted them, they had no idea who he was. He had to send them his Wiki page because they had no clue. How do people that are supposed to be running an athletic department not know who the coach is of one of the biggest Cinderella stories in college basketball? The incompetence is off the charts.

I wouldn't trust this guy with my credit card at Shoney's much less with a multimillion dollar coaching search.

Can anyone point out where this nugget of truth originated from? Is there a link to an old article or was it a radio interview? I vaguely remember when it happened, but I can't find anything.

Here you go, the initial call was from Coach L to a booster.

A phone call came from a Miami friend and businessman, Jose Mas. The week before Larranaga called Mas to inquire about the Miami coaching job. He was told Frank Martin was considered the frontrunner.

Jesus Christ. It's even more frustrating reading it 2 years later.

Only now Mas was saying Martin wasn't the choice, and if Larranaga was interested he should send in his resume. Larranaga didn't have a resume made up. He certainly didn't have one in Erie.

"Copy your Wikipedia page and send it to them," Jay said to his dad.

Larranaga stops now and smiles in telling the story from a couch in his office, a few minutes after beating Florida State, 71-47.
"So that's what I did," he said. "I sent my Wikipedia page to them. And an hour later I got a call for an interview."

I live in the DC area. Larranaga was a ******* rock star around here for the better part of a decade before he sent his wiki page to them.

It still baffles me how Coach L was still at George Mason 5 years after he took them to the Final Four.

He's the most underrated and underappreciated Coach at any sport, at any level.

He was uber popular just for getting George Mason into the 2nd round back in like 2002 when his son was one of his players. Everyone loved that guy.

I feel for the guy. Paul Dee never acknowledged him as his son.

While I never argue against additional $ and facilities for the athletic program, you're completely off base with the basketball analogy. Our success there has ALL been due to quality coaching. Perry Haith sucked in the BUC and Leonard Hamiliton excelled at the Miami Arena.

Perry Clarke and Haith made the tournament. And Coach L doesn't take the job without an on campus facility. Good coaches demand good facilities.

clark took what hamilton built and ran it into the ground. if it weren't for mcclintons star season, haith would be begging for an NIT invite
