Did I just read NCAA players can now fair catch kickoffs for a touchback???????????

I'm pretty sure they always could. Why you would want to fair catch a kickoff is the real question.

I think that rule’s been around for a while.

I mean you could just catch it and take a knee if it’s in the field of play anyway, what’s the difference. Kickoffs don’t hang in the air like punts anyway.

WRONG, this is a new rule, came out TODAY

"Originally proposed in March, a kickoff will result in a touchback if a player calls for and makes a fair catch inside the 25-yard line."

"The Football Rules Committee made the proposal to continue efforts to increase the number of touchbacks during kickoffs since fewer injuries occur during kickoffs that result in touchbacks than on kickoffs that are returned. All other aspects of the kickoff play will remain the same.
The new rule is the latest in a series of changes the committee has made in recent years in hopes of making the play safer. Before the 2012 season, kickoffs were moved from the 30-yard line to the 35. The committee also changed the starting position on touchbacks that year so that the receiving team started its drive on the 25-yard line instead of the 20."

Yes, you can call a fair catch. It isn't rare to see on pooch kicks. I believe the rule change is if you fair catch inside your 25-yard line the ball gets places on the 25-yard line as if it were a touchback. In my opinion it takes away directional kicking. If you get pinned in a corner and inside of getting catch inside your 25 which happens a lot, just fair catch it.

Yep, it was actually voted on today.

Not sure it'll change the game much though aside from keeping kids from getting their bells rung.

If true, then it’s a meaningless rule. If my intention is to “fair catch” even without the “new” rule, I just take a knee. It’s college. You’re down.

What a crap rule getting the ball at the 25 on a fair catch inside the 25, so much for pinning them deep on a KO.

of course it will effect it my man, how could that be meaningless????

Because you didn’t explain the part about getting it at the 25.

Next time, explain the complete rule change.

Saying you can “fair catch” in your porst, presupposes that the ball is down at the point of the fair catch.

See the difference?

.

I said I wasn't explaining it right, that's why I posted the link my man, although my title was fairly accurate

chill, it's Friday

If the receiving team only needs a field goal you will virtually be guaranteeing them a shorter field.

It's going to cut the number of returns down drastically IMO.
