Diaz is supposedly a top candidate for Miss State job

I'd be cool with that. we're 41st in the nation in defense. Miami is supposed to be top 10

man it hurts my head when posters are this clueless

I mean its a fact that we are 41st in total D.

true, but saying diaz can leave because of total yardage against is the dumbest sh*t i have ever heard

what about being top 15 in defensive efficiency and opponent completion percentage?

#1 in takeaways?

#1 in sacks per game

#2 in TFL (#1 in power five teams)

top 10-15 in yards per play allowed.

but yea let's diaz go because we're 41st in literally the metric that matters least

I think anyone with a brain knows Miami has a really really good D . Just watch the VT and ND games . We are very young in the secondary and LB and don't have a ton of depth but we are better this season on D then we have been in a long time and next season I suspect we will have the best D in the country.

Defense is far better than offense at this point, but this doesn't make them perfect. Frankly, we needed more stops from our D on Friday, they didn't get it done. We gave up 24 pts to Pitt with a true freshman QB making his first start, we should have overwhelmed that kid and team, we didn't.

Yep. Diaz has overcomplicated things this year. Last year the defense was simple, and the players were able to just react and not think.

This year we're playing way to much zone and asking McCloud and others to do more than they are capable of doing.

But Diaz at least makes really good halftime adjustments.

Vernables at Clemson has been a top DC for years and he doesn't get a look for this head coaching job, yet after two years at DC, programs are ready to raid our program for coaches? I swear they do this BS just to keep Miami down. No other reason.

In regards to defensive statistics: You don't judge a team's defense based solely on yards allowed per game. There's too many variables to base performance on one statistical ranking. For example, Miami's defense has faced multiple fast paced offenses this season. If a team runs 90 plays, of course they're going to rack up more yardage than a team that runs only 55. Couple that with an offense that can't convert third downs and has trouble sustaining long drives and you're putting your defense in a situation to fail. The fact that Miami's defense is still among the statistical leaders in points allowed per game, yards per play, tackles for loss, sacks, and turnovers is testament to the job that Diaz has done.

Not to say that I haven't been critical of Diaz though. His hyper aggressiveness can sometimes hurt the team. Heavy blitzing can make the game easier for an inexperienced quarterback. We've seen mediocre guys like Blackman from FSU, the UVA QB and the kid from Pitt find the easy hot read and shred the pass defense. I really wish they'd just rush four more often and let the linebackers play zone underneath.

My sauces tell me that Manny really wants the Miss State job. I'm told he pitched the idea of a Turn Over Chain with a cow bell attached to Miss State and they loved the idea.

As long as we have a 4-3 and Kul I'm not too beaten up about it. Miami should have a top 10 defense here, until then...

We should have a top 10 defense. Yes, we're much improved, but clearly there are areas where we can get better. I'm sure Coach Diaz would say as much.

Vernables' name is mentioned every season, at least in the media. He quickly dismisses any interest. He is either waiting for the right gig or thinks where he's at is where he is supposed to be. He was one of highest paid DC's at over $1.35M, before their 2016 NC season.

Why leave to take a mid-level HC job? Money talks, but he's only 46.

Venables is fine being a defensive coordinator. That's why he's NEVER shown any serious interest in a head coaching opening.:puzzled: hUh.

The one that actually matters

Curious why this is the only one that matters, just b/c it happens to be one of the few stats we are top ten in.

I think they all matter and paint a general picture of a defense that is very good but not elite. I think that's fair to say.

Btw, yards per play is great, but when you are like 81st in the nation on third down all it means is you give up lots of long drives. The good news is we are one of the very best teams in the nation in red zone touchdown defense. And if we didn't have miraculous field goal kicking against us would be a top red zone scoring defense. THAT is a huge stat.

For example, the Patriots are like the bottom of the league in yards/game (and are always poor in this stat), but are top 10 in red zone d and scoring d every year.

I think most of us though miss the days when we basically gave up nothing. A real elite Hurricanes defense.

I miss the days when you never posted here.

You signed up right after the Pitt game and have cried and complained ever since

What a snowflake porst. I just pointed out how we have a good, not elite defense. I can't imagine anyone who ever watched this team play pre Golden/Shannon eras who thinks this is an elite Canes defense. It's not. It's very good, and better than any we have had in over a decade.

Go watch some film on 1986-1994, or 2001-2003. When we get to that level, you would never ever see a freshman QB at Pitt drop 400 yards and 24 points on us. Ever.

Go fvck yourself you pathetic old bvtch.

Uh, how about that 2001 defense. I seem to recall VT dropping 45 points on us in the last game of the year.

And Pitt's QB didn't have 400 yards you ******* ******.

Diaz will be a better HC than he is a DC. He’s been good here, but every DC we’ve had here over the last 30 years not named Doritos has fielded similarly ranked defenses in the important categories. Get any number of guys in here, and they could do similarly well or better.

LOLOL we seriously have someone who thinks this defense is comparable to the 2001 team? God so much fail in your posting, little snowflake.

Yes. Venables was DC at OU before jumping to Clemson. He played and coached at Kansas State, and I think Bill Synder is retiring, again. Maybe the Kansas State is one he'd be interested in. Not concerned at all. I'll leave that to Clemson fans.

For TheRichtShow:

2001 defense compared to 2017

Pass efficiency D:
2001: 1st (rating of 75)
2017: 11th (rating of 109)

Total Defense:
2001: 6th (270 yards per game)
2017: 41st (362 yards per game)

Scoring Defense:
2001: 1st (9 points per game.....NINE!!)
2017: 14th (18 points per game)

Turnovers gained:
2001: 45
2017: 29

Yards per play allowed:
2001: 3.9
2017: 4.2

Defensive TDs:
2001: 7....SEVEN!!!!
2017: 2

In what UNIVERSE is our current defense even remotely as good as the 2001 defense? And 2001 wasn't even the best Defense ever, that was 1991 which was incomprehensibly dominant. I feel sorry for these millennials that never saw a truly great Canes D.
