So in a Miami Herald Coach announced Miami won't have the full 85 scholarship spots filled during the 2019 season.

So it sounds like the post spring game evaluation addition by subtraction roster management has begun.

How many are we at currently?

Feels like we haven't had a full 85 since pre-golden? Why is this always an issue? It's a self inflicting wound and disadvantage we go into every year with. (For example, we've had an awful punter the last two years, why not have 2 on scholarship and let them battle?)

Come on, all it sounds like is that we might not have a full 85. That’s basically all he said. Could be 84, who knows, I don’t know the number.

This is all he actually said: “Diaz revealed that UM likely won’t have the full allotment of 85 players on scholarship when the season begins, but he wouldn’t say how many he does expect to have on scholarship.”

I’m sure somebody can do the math and add who’s coming in as freshmens and figure out how many we will have at this particular moment.

I can see 3 more additions CB, OLine and LB and maybe a subtraction or two. There’s not many kids on the team where we know they wouldn’t even play at FIU like a Bar Milo. Maybe Gauthier or Tyric Martin.

Theres no news in there, imo. He was never going to be at 85 this year. Richt left him too little to work with, and attrition is natural.

i dont think we have the numbers to make it to 85 even if we wanted to given the yearly 25 scholarship restriction

id bet we add 2 more this offseason

Yeah, I thought we knew this already because we didn't have the initial counters to get to 85. I'd hope we at least hand the balance out to walkons though.

Kind of sounds like recruiting will be crazy next year.

Love Rolle calling out the players in his interview.

"But are those guys going to be able to win games for him is going to be the question. I don’t doubt Manny Diaz and what he can do as a head coach, but as far as the players, they definitely have to show a lot more.“

Typical overreaction.

First, Manny said we LIKELY won't have 85. That means maybe we will, maybe we won't. He doesn't say how many we will have. But the fact remains, now that the Portal exists, guys can leave the team at any point. Kelly Bryant left Clemson's team DURING THE SEASON. So it is entirely possible that many college teams will have fewer than 85 at the beginning of each season.

And until the IC rules are adjusted to account for transfers, there is no way to replace those outgoing transfers. Could be a yearly boon to walk-ons.

Do you guys actually know how many players other teams have on scholarship? It seems pretty unlikely a team could carry exactly 85 on a consistent basis, unless (1) it awards open scholarships to walk-ons, or (2) it ruthlessly cuts kids it doesn't want on the roster anymore. Otherwise, carrying 85 requires perfect roster management, accurately projecting attrition, minimizing attrition, etc.

Maybe the NFL will change its rules on undrafted free agents, and Venzell Boulware can re-enroll at UM.
