It's in Manny's blood to blitz, bring exotics, get creative, try and confuse QBs, etc. For him to bite the majority of his playbook last night and play vanilla on defense is a great sign of maturity as a coach (not many have the personality to do it).

We saw 1 high man press for 85% of the game. He knows we can win 1v1 matchups across the board, and he has faith leaving our boundary corners on an island.

This excites me more than anything last night. Remember Shannon's defenses during the golden years - 2 high man under for 95% of the game.

Simple works w Miami afleets.

He ran mostly single high vs syracuse.

Mostly because Syracuse runs the fastest hurry up O in the country. He had no choice but to play it straight all game (no time between plays).

There were plenty of times against VT's turtle offense where he could've overthought it, but he didn't.

At the beginning of the year we went back and forth from base zone, to nickel single high man under, to his zero blitzes. And we struggled as a result.

These coaches all have great self awareness and aren't afraid to throw out their pre-season train of thought.

It works when you have a great DL, which is what we have. I am a fan of playing our regular defense and forcing a QB to beat us on third down...because most of the time, we are going to get pressure anyway, and these QB’s can’t beat us. A guy like Wimbush is not going to beat us throwing into coverage on 3rd and 7.

Randy’s defenses were solid after 03, but they tended to get torn up by crossing routes and screens. Our team defends screens better than any team in the country. I recall maybe two actually picking up yards against us in the last two seasons.

He still got plenty exotic and blitzed s lot. Seemed like amari blitzed quite a bit. I saw one time where he pulled the DE to MLBs and blitzed all 5! It was creative that’s for sure. But I understand the coverage was generally the same

He ran mostly single high vs syracuse.

The difference is he ran it more from the 4-2-5 base and less stunts and twist on the DL. So it basically shutdown everything while giving us more speed to go sideline to sideline. Run, Pass, and Trick Plays were unavailable because you had an extra DB to help chase things down. Not to mention instead of having a LB we had a actuall DB to cover those slot WRs.

Hear what you saying but it was a easy decision. They only have 1 weapon in the passing game.

I watch enough CFB to know that coaches all across the country overthink things way to often. So although it seems like an easy decision from the outside, imo it takes a level of maturity as a coach to just dumb it down and play them straight up.

And should do it vs ND. They struggle in the passing game. Load up vs the run and make them throw.

Our defense is just better when we have bandy or carter out there over McCloud. It’s just the way it is right now. We don’t look nearly as good in our base as we do in our nickel.
