Dial down the blitzes

Diaz's blitz packages are a very predictable. I see a few things occurring as a result; opponents are getting into the vacated area and converting for big yards. UM is not getting home in time or flat out whiffing on the QB. We are talented enough to rush four and make QB's throw into the teeth of a very good secondary instead of routinely giving up 3rd and long by leaving guys uncovered.

Also, what's up with the containment along the front. The past two weeks we've seen QBs with average to below average foot speed running on UM's defense. It's not like Michael Vick is out there. Can a team have sound gap control and make plays behind the LOS?

I'm okay with the blitzes just not EVERY single time on 3rd and long.

There's gotta be a stat out there that proves we give up the longest third down conversions in the country

Keep the blitzes coming Diaz. We trying to kill people Qbs. And these Qbs have terrible numbers 3 and 4 picks 50% completion. Diaz has been carrying this team, for 2 seasons basically. It's a chess match are we to expect the other team won't adjust if we stop blitzing?

He does mix it up. We don't blitz on every play. I sat and watch No D play passive *** off coverage for 5 years and he did blitz, they were total crap shoot. And people saying these blitz don't get home, how does all 3 of our Lbs have sacks, Red wine, Jaqaun?

Wht people need to understand, Diaz is not trying to defend the opponents plays, he's trying to attack it. Force them to make quick decisions. Look how many turnovers we have forced.

Yes but the problem is when you face a team with a superior offensive mastermind as a coach (like our next two opponents *cough *cough), those blitzes are rendered useless.

What's the point of a sports message board if we don't discuss the team?

No, don't get me wrong, I love watching you guys talk as though you know more than the guys who do this for a living. By all means, keep telling us what kind of defense YOU would run.

All you're doing is proving his point. We're on a sports message board. Of course we don't know more than the coaches, but that doesn't mean they're perfect.

Manny absolutely does get too blitz happy at times and it can cost us. What's so great about him though is he tends to make spot-on adjustments at the half most of the time.

This staff is far and away better than the last staff, but this attitude of acting like we can't criticize the coaches is absurd. Again, this is a message board for discussing the team, both the good and bad. It's great that we're undefeated, but we have played absolutely no one to this point. Let's see how we do against a couple quality opponents the next couple weeks before we decide whether or not we can criticize the coaches.

I don't get the criticism of the defense when they are on the field the whole game and holding up strong. Is there a defense in the nation that would fare better facing 180+ plays in 2 weeks?

DJacks tweet said it best we don't know what we want. We hated No D and is passive style, but then we get aggressive and he's too cute and blitzes to much. Just sit back and let our front 4 get there. Wasn't that what we hated about Randy being the DC?

This is the problem with the internet. Any f*&kstick with a data plan or internet connection is now a guru. We should do this, we should do that, we should be this, we should be that. I mean listen to half of you (which i doubt are fans or you have a clear agenda) complain. We are an aggressive defense playing aggressive, but it isn't enough. Now you want to play passive because the Dline people called overrated after the first couple of games is now ready to dominate by themselves.

No actually that's not what we hated about Randy as DC. Randy was a well liked DC at the end of the day. Did he get some criticism? Yes of course. I think the main criticism of Randy as DC was his insistence on staying in a cover 2 shell and his blitzes were obvious and telegraphed most of the time.

Now I think Diaz has done a phenomenal job all around and I truly believe he is getting better. Really the only significant criticism I have of him is exactly what the OP pointed out. I don't think Diaz has gotten the feel yet of exactly when to dial down the chaos. I really believe that he needs to take a good look at what he has been calling on 3rd and long because a defense that plays as well as ours really shouldn't be giving up the amount of 3rd and longs we do. That leads me to believe that it is a schematic/alignment/playcall issue that keeps repeating itself in that same situation.

The good news is that this is something that should be relatively easy to correct. I love the aggressive scheme but that doesn't mean you blitz on every down in every situation. So I believe the OP makes a valid point when he says that maybe Diaz should time down the blitzing on 3rd and long because many times in that situation it has not been necessary and it almost comes across as being gratuitous. Again this is basically my only point of contention and I think Manny has done tremendous work overall especially given the depth or lack thereof he inherited.
