It would be hard to say that the recruiting process has gone exactly to plan for West Orange running back and Cane commit Dexter Williams.
After an explosion of major offers in February and March, Williams (6-0, 192) surprised many with an April decision at Miami’s spring game.
“I thought things would slow down but it actually hasn’t,” Williams said. “At that time in my mind, I was thinking that they would look at me like I was done with the recruiting process. They probably figured I was shutting it down and I wouldn’t be open. A lot of schools are still coming at me, some even harder than before. They’re doing anything to get me on a visit or talk to my coaches. They keep tabs on me and check up every day.”
Williams admitted that he may have jumped the gun with his choice. He says that in regards to when he did it, not who he picked.
“At times, I regret making an early decision,” Williams said. “It’s nothing against Miami, they could definitely be the right place for me. I just think maybe it would have been smarter if I waited longer.”
Williams recently got his first real chance to investigate into his other options. He took a lengthy college tour that stopped at Georgia Tech, Louisville, Ohio State, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Clemson.
“I got to experience a lot of new things because other places outside Florida are different,” Williams said. “It was a good opportunity for me to see all these top schools so quickly. They have a lot to offer and it changed how I look at everything. Everybody has something in common but also something that makes them unique. It’s hard to realize that you can only pick one.”
Williams said that he can sense the Miami staff is concerned about losing him. He couldn’t make any promises about where he'll land but he tried his best to be up front.
“I do, we had a little talk about that,” Williams said. “I kept it real with them and told them how I feel about the whole situation. They said still want me as a Cane because I’m one of the biggest recruits they have. They would love for me to stay since they know I could help them do big things. I plan on sticking with Miami but I want to get a better idea about some other schools.”
Williams said that the best way they can help their chances is by continuing to recruit him hard. Down the road, their on-field product may come into play too.
“Basically just do what they’ve been doing, making sure I’m alright,” Williams said. “They can keep in contact and prove how much they really want me. I also want to see how they do this season, that was actually the main reason I wanted my decision to wait. I didn’t sign anywhere yet so I’ll see how their season and everybody else’s goes.”
Williams carries a grade of 96 from 247Sports, ranking him 62nd overall in the nation, 4th at his position, and 11th in the state of Florida.
