Dewan in the NBA

I guess Mr. Lawrence doesn't read this forum regularly. If he did, he would've seen the strong opinion here (a bit muted now since more facts came out) that it was NOT The NCAA who was the "bad guy" in the Dewan situation but our own administration ("turning ourselves in" when there was no reason to do so).

Why is it a for gone conclusion that Dewan is not coming back?

I know he said he would focus on the draft but Dewan is going to have to play extremely well at the combine and at team workouts to be drafted. I am not saying he does not have the talent but he does not have any game film from this past season so he will be a mystery.

40% of a 30 game schedule is only the first 12 games of the season. Essentially, the non-conference portion of your schedule.

No one is thinking about this but Dewan would be better off coming back to school, sitting out the first 12 games of the season and putting up the numbers in 2019 that we expected him to produce in 2018. That would help his draft stock tremendously.

Yes, it is somewhat wishful thinking but it is actually the best strategy given his situation. Evaluate the entire situation from a logical perspective.

You may be right (about not signing with an agent yet). If he did return next season, it would be o/a January 1, 2020. NCAA ruled he would have to sit the rest of this season, and 40% of next season.

Tim James is by far the best big. Titi Horford was good but we had some bad teams here and was underdeveloped. However did have a pro career.
Isnt Kadji doing real well Europe?

We do need better development of our bigs. Coach L has been excellent with guards.

L and his staff turned Julian Gamble into a **** good ACC big. Kenny Kadji was a stretch 4 that flamed out at Florida, became an All-ACC level player at Miami. Tonye Jekiri was a raw, skinny dude when he got here, and left as one of the best rebounders and interior defenders in the most rugged conference in the country. Reggie Johnson developed quite well, even though he was always uniquely suited for the college game. Kamari Murphy was a dude who was an afterthought at Okie Light, turned into a pretty solid rebounder and defender.

Miami isn't working with NBA level bigs(When was the last time Miami got a BIG that people had pegged as a surefire NBA guy)* but L has a **** good track record of getting the most out of the bigs he does get. They may not be future NBA stars, but they usually become pretty good collegiate players. It's amazing how many people grade "Development" as whether you make the NBA. Jack McClinton didn't do anything in the NBA, while Dequan Jones got to be a starter for a season. Who was the better basketball player?

*Dewan Hernandez is the only big Miami has landed in the last 10 years that people saw NBA potential in when he arrived. It's amazing that Miami has done anything over the L era, considering that he's had to maximize guys that people saw as collegiate bigs, nothing more.

Tim James was 6-7, thats not a big man.

Exactly, Mario Bland and Elton Tyler played the "5" position when Tim was a Senior. That 98-99 team had a nice front line though with Tim at the 4 and John Salmons (also 6'7) at the 3. Hemsley at shooting guard. Jennings wasn't much of a scorer at PG but he distributed nicely. Think he averaged 6 APG on that team.

He's going to be a beast IMO. The silvering lining in this garbage is that he's going to have the largest chip on his shoulder and is going to work his tail off. Having basketball stripped away from him I'm sure has made him 1000x hungrier (and the kid was a savage already to begin with). Best of luck in the NBA and can't wait to watch you Dewan!

Feels like a good time to get some action on this thread

Dewan is going to have to play himself into the league. Meaning he's going to have to go a year or 2 either overseas or developmental league here, before he whiffs an NBA roster. Still needs a ton of developing to do -- physically, mentally and skill wise. He's not a bad kid by any means, but has gotten some bad advice and has the wrong people in his ear. Needs to take a step back and hit the refresh button. Get back to what he was doing before he got to Miami and go from there. Best of luck to the young man. GO CANES!

Who convinced Dewan to opt out early so he can at play himself maybe into the NBA some years down the road when he could have raised his worth by staying.

I've always had issues on how and why these kids ignore the negatives of leaving early but just believe what might happen maybe some day possibly .

GOCANES

It worked out good for Dewan that he got drafted but there were 45 other guys who turned pro that did not get drafted.

Truthfully, if you read between the lines. The NBA cares more about developing the G-League than helping college basketball. Especially since college basketball will not pay the athletes. It will only get worse in 2 years when the one and done rule expires.

w teams owning their g league affiliate now, it makes more sense to go that route and get a head start

If you do not want to be in college, you shouldn't be forced to be there. Might need more "minor leagues" and/or teams though. Maybe a structure like baseball with AA and AAA minor leagues.

G League pays something like 7k a month. That's more than a decent wage. Minor league baseball players live in poverty.

Blake James should hire a new PR department. Saying "I honestly did not know this" could be misunderstood as him not being in touch with the dealing of the athletic department, which is his job.

It was a poor choice of words. His statement should have read, This is a great accomplishment and all the credit goes to Coach L and his staff.

SMH. C'mon Blake, help me help you.

Blake James is LAZY.

Also, does anyone know if Davon Reed is still in the NBA?
