Just a lot of boxscore watchers who don't actually know the game. They see a kid who averaged <7 ppg as a true freshman and say, 'he's going to be the weak link in our starting lineup'.

What they don't see is that he's likely going to be defending every opponent that we'll face best guard next season.

Our 2024-25 was loaded with good 3 pt shooters and they sucked. Meanwhile we were a mediocre 3pt team last year (and 75% of the comments in the offseason were trashing Jai over the lack of 3 pt shooters) and that team ended up being really good.

What matters is having a roster that fits your identity. Ours is defense, rebounding, and athleticism. Allen checks all those boxes, so I don't agree with saying he's a weak link.

Anyone willing to downplay the importance of shooting in regards to roster construction is stuck in the early eighties. No one is saying that the ability to shoot is the end all be all, but unless you have OVERWHELMING talent, it's almost impossible to be a true contender without some shooters at your disposal.

Keep in mind, last season's team couldn't shoot and won DESPITE being terrible from deep and the FT line. They are a unique statistical outlier, because it's rare for a team to win in this era and be that bad in those two crucial areas. Teams that are expected to challenge for a Final Four berth(Which is what a top 10-15 team is expected to do), are usually able to play multiple styles and win games in different ways. As it stands today, this roster can really only win in one way(A very similar style to the 2025 squad, which is win rock fights and wear teams down with athleticism), and history indicates that a lack of shooting lowers a team's ceiling, unless someone(or multiple someones) shows significant improvement in that area.
