Derrick Smith


Derrick will definitely remain at Safety. This pic was just posted today by Banda. I am not an insider by any stretch of the imagination. However, one of Derrick's girlfriends still lives here in Jacksonville, in which I work with, and also am pretty close friends with her father. Our families are close friends.

I've spoken with Derrick on a few occasions when I've been over to my co-workers house, and met him a few times as well.

My co-worker/friend is a huge gaytor fan, and so is his daughter. He is always trying to get Derrick to tranfer to UF, though he knows it will never happen. As of last week, I was over there when Derrick called. Derrick was just talking about how excited he is to be in the position that he is in at Miami. He really feels like he has the inside track to be starting at Safety during the 19, 20 seasons.

FYI: I will never put their business out there, but I can say that we, as fans, are not the only ones frustrated with Knowles. Several players share our sentiments.

he looked more impressive than romeo finley has ever looked and romeo was a 4 star.

not sure why either. Looking at film this kid is a head hunter and has ball skills.

Yep, His tape in high school showed he was an all around safety with very good ball skills and range. Excited to see how he develops
 
I think the Knowles issue will take care of itself this year. We've recruited too well at the safety position recently for it not to...

Anyways he was our Backup Nickel DB last year to Trajan Bandy. So he's going to get a lot of PT regardless what actual position it is hes going to be playing. But don't expect Jaquan Johnson or Sheldrick Redwine to be coming off the field too much when healthy. They are our senior starting Safeties, and thats not going to change.

I think one of the freshman will take Redwines job at some point. At a minimum, take a lot of snaps away.

Doubtful. Safety is too important in Diaz's system. Even if Hall, Smith, or Carter are more talented, they WILL make more mistakes than Redwine would. Diaz is going to want the consistency that having both Redwine and Jaquan out there will bring.
Obviously All 3 are going to get a good amount of snaps, and hopefully Knowles and Finley literally only play on ST and then transfer out next offseason.

If we're looking at a safety depth chart/power ranking (and with all due respect to @rok) I'm thinking:

Jaquan Johnson (senior)
Sheldrick Redwine (senior)
Amari Carter (sophomore)
Derrick Smith (sophomore)

Then the young'uns -
Gurvan Hall (freshman)
Gilbert Frierson (freshman) - I think he ends up at safety IMO

Then the odd-men out -
Robert Knowles (R-Junior)
Romeo Finley (Junior)

I think Smith, Carter, and Hall are the top three in 2019 with Frierson logging minutes at safety a la Redwine.

Basically I see Knowles and Finley as depth players at best going forward.

I was just being real. She, as well as her father, is well aware of the situation at hand with him being in Miami around all of that sinful temptation (lol), while she remains here in Jax. They are not naive. Lol.

He is a phenomenal, well mannered, and bright young man. He is just sowing his royal oats........as he should! Rumble, young man, rumble!

It was shocking to me and surprising, vs VT he closed on a play toward the left hash and I was like **** who da fuq was that. Kids got potential, I think it was the VT or ND game.
