We've all heard about the gains in the weight room that Gregory Rousseau has made, but I'm curious about D Smith. He is one of the players that I'm most anxious to see in the Spring. He got some good burn last season and proved he could play, but if he fills out more, he could easily be big enough to be a linebacker. Does anyone have any insight as to how he is doing in the offseason?

PS.....I'm not a stalker.

Been a fan of Smith since he signed. I am also quite intrigued about his development. As far as a move to LB I'm not sure but I do think Derrick can play. It will be interesting to see how he does against the pass and what kind of range he has at this level.

What is the obsession with positional moves due to possible weight gain? Everyone in this board thinks if the DB is a hair over 195 he’ll be a LB down the road....

Guys like Frierson and Smith are freaks. Fri is gonna be a 215 pound DB. Smith is gonna be a 220 S.

I remember saying when we signed Derrick Smith that I though he'd end up being a LB here and everyone was giving me **** for it lol.

Anyways he was our Backup Nickel DB last year to Trajan Bandy. So he's going to get a lot of PT regardless what actual position it is hes going to be playing. But don't expect Jaquan Johnson or Sheldrick Redwine to be coming off the field too much when healthy. They are our senior starting Safeties, and thats not going to change.

Safety will be a very interesting group to watch this upcoming season. You have 2 senior starters in Johnson and Redwine who as much as I respect them and their game are somewhat limited athletically. Then you have a trio of physical freaks in Amari Carter, Derrick Smith and Gurvan Hall. It's going to be interesting to see how each is used and how the group as a whole blends together. What we are currently lacking there is a ballhawking centerfielder with range and ball skills. I thought Frierson was a natural to fill that role but he is needed at CB. The bottom line is that I expect this years safety group to be very solid and be improved over last year due to experience and the addition of EE Gurvan Hall.

It was reported in the last 2 weeks that Smith is up to 215 now.

If we’re going to take the next step defensively the safety spots need to change. We need Smiff and Hall to be our fs rotation. Jaquan is fine at ss. Let Redwine spell JJ when he gets tired.

i dont get the position change obsessions. trayone to db, finley to lb, smith to lb, deejay to cb, bethel to de, etc.
did you guys see what our safeties looked like under butch?

I typically sit back and listen to people just spout off. Most posters would have moved Sean Taylor to DT by now.

He's a SS all the way. It's possible he could be an OLB in some systems. He's an average tackler with good instincts. He has stiff hips in coverage though. It was obvious if you attended games in person.

Need to keep Smith at S. Kid has more than enough speed and showed to have some serious potential in the defensive backfield last year.

I like this kid i remember a lot of posters were upset we signed him and he got some good burn last year so im excited to see how good he can be

I think Derrick Smith has an excellent chance to be a great safety...the kid is smooth (good feet), has good range (speed), and can tackle.

Derrick Smith I can see playing FS, despite his size, with Amari Carter in as a Strong Safety all day!

We need some bigger head hunting kids back there; so long as they can cover as well.

Note: If anything Amari Carter is more of a candidate to be moved to LB, if his cover skills doesn't improve; but I think he will improve..
