2026 Derrek Cooper 5* RB/ATH from Chaminade Commits to Texas

so fla is overrated these days. the problem is Georgia and Texas are strong with hs talent but their local schools lock most of the best kids down.
Out of the top 5 kids in Texas over the past 4 cycles, 10 have gone to a Texas school (UT - 4, 8&4 - 5, TT - 1). UGA has landed 8 of the top 5 in GA over the past 4 cycles, with 4 of those being last cycle. They don’t exactly lock down every recruit, but it’s definitely better that Florida.

UF has landed 3/20. We landed 1 and that was Kiko. Bama, UGA, and 8&4 have landed more top 5 FL kids since the 22 cycle than any FL school, which is ridiculous. FSU hasn’t landed a top 5 FL kid since the 2020 cycle.

I think he’s better than Manny and agree with your previous post about raising the floor. I’ve posted a bunch of times that I think he’s stabilized the situation - like if he were gone tomorrow, we’re hiring from a better position than we were when we hired him. It’s not the result I ultimately hope for, but it’s necessary. First and foremost we need to be seen as at least a functional situation. I think he does that. My feeling though is that someone else will need to take the next step but maybe he’ll do it this year and that would be great, believe me.

I am fortunate enough to have gotten a lot of good winning years out of this team after growing up in an era when we weren’t good. I’m actually fine if I never see a canes natty again in my lifetime but I do want to see a competitive program that’s competent and respected.
I don’t trust this university to hire an upgrade. To be dead *** honest they will f up the hire and turn us back in the new or same Miami.

I made a thread on how his very subject it’s disheartening

I keep telling myself the kid isn't a natural RB. His film isn't as N/S as Lingard's, but it's also doesn't show the hips I would expect from a 5 star. But the fact he could potentially be an even better LB -- I also keep thinking he could be a rich-man's James Cook. That and the fact he's local and was all Cane until a couple months ago, makes me feel like Mario's staff really messed this one up.

Recruiting is now a 24/7/365 job. Our class has holes. We didn't think it would back in May. Mario now has to fill them. If that's flipping kids later this class cycle, expanding his board and stacking 3/low 4-star Mario specials hoping he finds his next Cooper/Moten/Frederique, or going to the portal, he's got to get it done. I expect he knows that better than anyone, and will do so.
we dont have hole at rb. We have a local rb committed currently ...who is 1a to b in recruiting wise to Cooper locally.

I would personally try to flip Amari Latimer and offer Amari Thomas from Blountstown if 2 rbs is wha you want (which we should take)

I'm petty so i wouldnt really put huge efforts into continuing recruiting cooper.

Latimer would likely come for half of whatever they offered in nil to Cooper.

Just came to check if Mario got stuffed in the locker by the big boys. He did again

Carson Beck better be at least 80% of what Cam did last year, AND Heatherman HAS to deliver, or I really feel like the wheels will fall off. Mario’s tendency to make life harder on himself is becoming what he’s known for, and that PAC12 title is farther in the rear view

It ain’t going to be about wins I tell you that. That’s just a set in excuse if we lose. Cause if we win I guarantee these kids will go where the bag is and they should.
We had the best offense in the country last year and still cant get what we should at the skills on offense. I think Mario is actually a very good recruiter - maybe top 10. I think he’d probably recruit elite at Texas, UGA and Bama. There’s value to bags and more so in this case, SEC status unfortunately. But still, I think he needed to get to the acccg last season and then some and he didn’t and I think the trajectory looks negative.

I can’t throw out on field performance in year 4. That’s a year 1 and 2 thing where it matters less. That’s all he’s got to sell right now, that and high draft picks. Then again, Cam Ward should have opened that up for Mario but he didn’t so there’s that too.

The difference is Mario progressed every year. Manny took a step back in year 3. If we didn’t have Cam, I think last year is nasty though. This year is kind of make or break hen it comes to the direction of the program.
In year 3 Manny had a qb coming off an acl injury in the bowl game, he got reinjured and we had to start a redshirt freshman who never played before majority of the year.

And we ended up winning 5 of our last 6 games, we lost two other games by a combined 3 points one was a missed fg..And this is all with us playing a bunch of true freshman to end the year

I didn’t like manny, and think we have a much higher ceiling with mario but if we’re looking objectively in hindsight manny wasn’t as bad as people say. He actually did more with less and his players were key players on mario best team and a top smu team last year.

You don't think Manny is as bad as people say b/c the plug was pulled on him rather quickly. But, Manny is a good fit for where he currently is. He's not a coach that would've built Miami back into a perennial power. Mario has raised expectations for Miami to be a playoff program. Recruiting is indeed going well and Mario has shown to me the most important factor that I believe makes a successful coach, the willingness to adapt.
