Derek Smith

Derrick smith is in the mold of rayshawn jenkins coming out of highschool. Same exact type of player pretty much. Jenkins was one of the top 5 athletes we had in terms of pure athleticism last year. While Jenkins was good in coverage I think smith will provide even more ability in that area

If you check out his high school film this should not have been a big surprise. It was just a matter of how fast he would pick up the system and speed of college game.

You're right that they definitely were known to have talent. What is surprising to me is how much time Smith has spent in man coverage or at least with coverage responsibilities at the line of scrimmage. I got the impression over the spring and summer that he was a thumper, in-the-box type safety, and that he might even be moved to linebacker. To see the staff trust him in these situations has been super interesting.

Aint gonna lie plays much faster then i thought, You can tell hes still thinking out there but color me impressed
 
He won me over when he showed up shirtless for a visit with our coaches.

This guy looks like another old school underhyped Cane dog.

I think Diaz and Co. was waiting to get these boys some seasoning because I know they knew Carter and D. Smith were better. They confident they know what to do and can handle the big stage.
 
Wouldn't mind seeing this kid (or carter) close to 220 and seeing him get a shot at LB. Love his frame and his style and I think he'd be perfect for the position. Don't know if he has the range at safety and we have some studs coming in next year

Knowles actually played late in the 4th quarter and made a nice tackle on the QB. Just like Mike Smith they will turn him into a player.
 
He looked lost 2 weeks ago vs cuse. Amazing what the coaches have done in the development of the secondary.
 
Been thinking about this dude the last few games. Think he’s gonna be really good for us. Much faster than he looked in high school and likes and knows how to tackle
