Delaney will continue to play. 'Doing a good job'

The first question to Mark Richt on Sunday’s day-after-Toledo teleconference was about redshirt senior cornerback Dee Delaney‘s “tough” transition from FCS The Citadel to UM.

“He’s still learning the ins and outs of what we do,” Richt said. “We feel he’s in a good place. He has not played perfect, but everybody at all positions has struggled. He’s at a position that’s more visible than most, and I guess there’s more interest in him because he’s a transfer.

“We think he’s doing a good job. We believe in him and we’re going to continue to play him.”

Would you have expected Richt to say Delaney sucks instead?
What were your expectations when he got the inevitable, if not obvious, question about him playing poorly?
If he says he is trash then you and other posters will accuse him of throwing his players under the bus.

He should have been bland, generic, innocuous, boring, and evasive.

'We all need to play better' type stuff. Now DD can rest on his laurels.

It makes me wonder how bad the guys behind him are, granted, this was game #2 with a 2 week break... blah blah blah. Hopefully we will see an improvement in the communication by the DBs and better coverage from Delany and the rest of the team this Friday.

This is simply coach speak, means nothing. It should be obvious by now that Richt isn’t the type of guy to publicly put a player on blast.

Also have to keep in mind that we really don’t have much depth at all at corner, so there’s that. He’s going to have to play, and we just have to hope he improves.

CMR knows DD confidence is hanging by a thread right now. Can't have the ole head ball coach pile on. Like it or not we will have to play with Dee throughout the year. Lets just hope he gets into game shape and starts to figure it out.

Why?
Delaney knows he is stinking it up and so does his coaches.
Get him coached up and playing better, he doesn't need to rip on him in public to make us fans feel better.

I agree that he should not rip him in public. However, he gave the dude a full-vouch. Never go full-vouch.

Uhhhh,

"He has not played perfect, but everybody at all positions has struggled."

I'm glad you're ok with him saying 'he's doing a good job'. I'm not thrilled.

He did what you said, you're just complaining to complain. Do you honestly believe Richt thinks Delaney has played great? If not, then do you think Richt has ulterior motives from him starting? Or do you think Richt is purposely sabotaging the defense for starting him?

What's the point of all of this other than you getting butt hurt over coach speak?

I'll say this, the coaches left Delaney exposed and offered him little help. There are times a CB will be over matched (I think the WR he covered is projected to be a draft pick so he isn't some tomato can), but when you see a CB struggling like that you usually see the guy get some help. Delaney obviously couldn't keep up with the guy, but he was left hanging. I also saw a few times when Delaney had man coverage and Diaz called a blitz, the WR would run a quick slant hot route and Dee had no chance. Unless a CB is playing much tighter (and that's not his call), he is going to get his lunch eaten every single time by an accurate qb on that slant.

Trap thread. OP expects head coach to throw player under bus, would also complain if coach threw player under bus...

If you expect CMR to single out or throw a player under the bus publicly then you're in for rude awakening.

Does anyone really believe Delaney feels he's got a free pass? This is a kid in his money year who passed up a late round take in the NFL. He's ****ting bricks right now, and I guarantee he's more motivated than ever to play well from now on. Who knows if he can rise to the occasion, but I have no doubt he's going to leave it all out on the field.

That really says a lot about the lack of depth behind him.
