I'll breakdown some plays of things we NEED to do better if we play to be a elite fundamental defense.

Red on Head = Looking at the wrong thing.
Red on Feet = Where the player went

Green on Head = Where they should be looking at
Green on Feet = where they should have go/gone
Green Circle = where they should be positioned

Play #1)

This play is against UNC. This play went for a loss of about 2 yards on a screen but honestly this play should of been a TD. I'll point of the things we did wrong.

a) If I had to guess this was a cover 3 but for some reason Pinckney decides to go rogue and just completely abandon his zone on 3rd and 18, 3RD AND 18!! THIS IS WHY OUR 3rd DOWN DEFENSE IS AN UTTER JOKE. Undisciplined plays like this from a player who is suppose to be our best player. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A TD. Bandy made an unbelievable play despite A) almost running himself out of the play and B) avoiding 2 Offensive linemen.

b) Look at Pinckney again. He is just eye balling the QB. He did not look at his keys ONCE on this play. Not Once! If he had he would of saw the offensive linemen running out in space to block. He would of sniffed out the screen and been there to help defend the play. Instead he take steps closer to the LOS on 3rd and 18 and of course gets washed by the rush of the O-linemen.

Had UNC executed the block this would of been a 10-0 ball game and who knows what happens considering this was about a 4 point win. I know we're an aggressive defense but playing aggressive doesn't mean playing UNDISCIPLINED football. Stuff like this will get him drafted in the 4th or 5th round if he continues because if I can see it there I bet your *** the guys who get paid to evaluate him will see it to.

I mean just look at the TE. He can't even believe this LB just ran himself out of the play so easily!

c) On this 3rd and 18 play we should have our LBs should be A LOT deeper then this. I don't know if Manny teaches our players to give up the underneath stuff and rally to the ball in situations like this but he needs to if he ever plays on fielding an above average 3rd down defense. Plays like this is a constant especially on 3rd down. It like Manny doesn't know the concept of rushing 4 and sitting back in zone on 3rd and very long. This is why his defense gets called gimmicky (Not on this play though). This is small details as to why our 3rd down defense has been horrible under Manny.

Play #2)

This play was in the spring game. This was a play action roll out that should not have been a 8 yard play. This should of been a 40+ yard play with an accurate pass.

a) Shaq just blitzed and did not do his assignment. If I had to guess this was a cover 1-robber. 1 Safety deep, another safety short, and man to man across the board. Shaq abandoned his duties and went for the home run play instead of playing disciplined and covering his man. It was a 8-9 yard completion but had Rosier threw an better pass this would of been a 40 yard play easily. Poor mental breakdowns like this how why we give up so many 1st downs and why we're always in 3rd and short situations which in turn is why we have a horrible 3rd down defense %. See, if Shaq covered his man like he was suppose to do Rosier would have no options but to run for a 2-3 yard gain which is what you want. Shaq, Pick, and the outside CB would have been there for the stop.

b) Garvin rushed in when he should have read the mesh point/hand-off and making sure it wasn't a play action by the QB. Our DE need to become more disciplined when they're the unblocked assignment. To many times you see guys just rush in there with NO idea were the ball is. To much assumptions on these types of plays by our unblocked edge setter.

play 2.webp

This is how Garvin should of played it. This is how our edge guys SET the EDGE. Beautiful job by Joe Jackson on the play above and guess what? The play CAME to HIM for a TFL stat. So not only did he have the QB on lock if he tucked it but got a TFL on the play for playing discipline and not to trying so hard to be Aaron Donald. When the offense is flowing away from you then SET THE EDGE and WATCH the QB/Play action!

Last and final Play #3)

This play is a 1st and 20 screen by Clemson that was converted because of techinque.

a) In image #1 Both Smiths are in good position to make a play but if you look at image #2 they BOTH ran themselves out of the play. Both... They both took presumptive angle instead reading and reacting by engaging in the block and making sure they have access to their outside and inside. D.Smith instead goes outside while M.Smith goes inside giving Clemson a hug gap of green. Owens wasn't fast enough while talking a poor running angle.

The blue line in image #1 is the line of defense the WR shouldn't get further then with 2-3 players there for a stop.

play c b.webp

This is how they should of played the screen. This is Smith which doesn't make sense how he ***** up o the 1st and 20 play. As you can see Smith initiate and engages in the block so that he has control and has access to the inside or the outside of the field and he is just reading the WR. This WR screen was a gain of about 3 yards.

In case you didn't get message. It playing aggressive while understanding when to play discipline football and not forcing the issue and running ourselves out of plays in the name of getting sacks and tackles for loss. This would help us with 3rd down defense and overall defense. We need to learn to do the little things until we can't get them wrong instead of just doing this right things once and a while.

I also wonder if a lot of this is just plain bad football IQ. Some of these examples scare me (especially the Pinckney) because while people laud him for his incredible instincts its also counterproductive if he doesn't have a high football IQ to know better in situations like that.

That's what made Ed Reed so legendary. He had incredible instincts AND a legendary football IQ. (and I think that's what is going to make Jaquan Johnson an All American this year. He has both as well)

I don't know man..you have me nervous now. I don't like seeing bad football IQ plays because as Jimmy Johnson said, "Hit me in the head with a hammer if you bring me an elite athlete who is just plain football stupid. I cant use him."

You must have been bored

Then don't read it then..This is great stuff here because while we all are expecting this defense to be great this year (mainly due to our LBs) these are the types of plays that will lose you games quickly.

We’re these just bad plays or was this consistent throughout the year..You can nickpic any D and find blown assignments..with that said we need improvements on 3rd down on both sides

Great breakdown. Examples explaining exactly why Manny is preaching guys being disciplined and playing assignment football so far this spring. We became a D that relied too heavily on the big play last year and because of that we allowed inferior teams (especially qb's) to pick us apart at times.

Championship expectations, another year in the system, veterans at nearly every position, and players that allow us to play a scheme better suited for today's game (striker position) have me believing we will have a more focused and confident (in executing their role as well as confidence in their teammates execution) group.

Health will be the key 🙏

Not to be rude. But you won't win championships with the attitude "I'm sure every team has mental errors also"

That Bama D expects everyone to play their role perfectly and so should we.

I'd need to see the first play run through, but are you sure Pinckney isn't spying the QB there and they just called the perfect play against the defense we ran?

That's not me saying that for sure, it's asking the question because in that still it looks like Pinckney is either spying, or he's stepping up to blitz because he doesn't believe anyone in his coverage area. If it's the latter, then yes, he stepped up too quickly and lost eye discipline and should've read his keys. If he's the spy there, then it's more understandable.

My problem with Mann Diaz' defense's thus far have been the fact he's too aggressive on 3rd down. If it were me, I'd be even more aggressive on 1st & 2nd down and play a lot more soft zone on 3rd and long.

Either way, appreciate the efforts. When it comes to LB play it's often difficult to understand what the responsibility was from a gap standpoint without understanding the entire defensive call (which is often tough to do from this side of things). I agree that Pinckney was often undisciplined and went for the big play rather than staying in his gap. He often cost the defense first downs last year.

I can get into it another time but the OPs breakdown is based on a whole lot of assumptions based on play calls. Furthermore, some of the breakdowns are a little wrong as well.
I don't have tonnes of time to break it down, but some of the items they are doing the right assignment.

Sometimes people have to remember, the offense is on the field too and their trying to trick the defense, it's not easy man. They're gonna win sometimes too.

Good post but didnt read it all. Those are 3 plays out of 700+ defensive snaps. No team (offense or defense) will win 100% of their reps. Anyway, thank God we finally got a good football discussion going.

The biggest defensive theme for the year is how well we mix and match zone blitz (less, I hope), zone without blitz and man coverages. With our 3rd down DL package, there should be less reliance on "needing" the blitz, but I understand that's Coach Diaz's MO. So, if and when he brings Safeties and LBs, let's hope they're unpredictable and used more sparingly.

Teams are going to continue to quick pass us one way or the other. Why help them?

This is where instincts and discipline meet and separate. Split second 56 is going to go on instinct and go for the sack he's a gambler who always bets on himself. While he comes away with a lot of highlights because of this he also has a lot of plays like this where it doesn't pan out. Some of those times nothing happens because someone else makes a play or it's an incomplete pass.

Another issue is i think we play our Safeties too deep sometimes which allows for a little too much space in the defense. A lot of times the slot receiver for the opposing team could just sit in an open crease of the defense and it would always be there because of the alignment of the safeties or linebackers covering the area

We play our Safeties at the typical depth depending on coverage. Outside of dropping the single high when we've zone blitzed another DB, I haven't seen anything egregious. When we removed the 3rd LB from the equation, some things changed re: the slot or inside WRs. But, then we missed on some 1 on 1 matchups - both at Safety and Corner. Delaney was really rough to start last season. And, I keep asking about Redwine's progress for a reason.

Manny's defense is terrible. No idea why we play man coverage with all our LBs at the LOS on 3rd and longs.

Watching film from last year, the linebackers missed so many tackles it was sickening. Especially Owens & McCloud. Guys always going for the big hit rather than wrapping them up.

I personally think our defense is too flashy with a lot of unnecessary gimmicks such as Chad Thomas in 1-1 in coverage with Gavin in the FSU game for a huge gain that should have never happened.

The middle of the field is always WIDE OPEN.

I completely agree with everything you said! Minus the last part ("teammates execution") just sounds harsh.
