Defensive Coordinators

We should grab Scottie Hazelton from Wyoming if we ever get the chance.

He's an NFL guy and his D's always over-perform.

Vic Koenning at Troy is another great defensive mind.

There are precious few defenses that are truly dominant, shut down every facet of the offense, types. In fact, I'll say there are none in college football. Alabama, the gold standard, has given up an average of 33 points in their last three championship game appearances.

And, nobody is Alabama. All defensive schemes are a compromise. Wishing it weren't so means you'll keep wishing forever.

I'll also say that coaches who do more with less, don't always show big performance leaps when they have more. That's true on both sides of the ball. There was this coach from Temple . . . .

True.

Bama gave up 35 and 40 the two previous NC games against Clemson. The Tide also gave up 42 to Ohio State in a CFP loss prior to that. Oklahoma scored 38 in a bowl win over Bama. I recall A&M and Johnny Manziel moving up and down the field on Bama in the games they split. Bama struggled against spread offenses when Saban relied on old-school 250 lb LBs. He's adapted, and shut down Clemson in last year's CFP. Clemson no longer had Deshaun Watson, though.

Easy.

You already mentioned Brett Venables and Bud Foster.

You got Bob Shoop at MSU, Pete Kwiatkowski(Washington DC), Danny Gonzales at ASU, Alex Grinch(CO-DC at OSU), and Jim Knowles at OK St.

Hes a 3-4 guy
Leavitt can and has run both a 4-3 and a 3-4. With him it really depends on his personell. If he has talent at the 3 tech and DE then he runs a 4-3. If he recruited more talent at LBer and lacks a bit at DT or DE then he switches to a 3-4.

Nick runs a 3-4 defense with a Star nickel formation (3-3-5)
No...he uses every alignment in the book outside the 46. He just uses some more than others depending on the game just like belichick.

So he really runs a hybrid front...

In terms of OSU, you think Alex Grinch is a better DC than Greg Schiano?

No, but I was very impressed with the job he did at Washington State before being hired away to be the co-dc(especially with the O they play). I’ll also take any guy who coached a position on a Gary Pinkel Defense any day of the the week. I’m also not getting Schiano.

I don’t know why anybody would neg this. Scottie’s got 3 guys who are going to play in the leagues at Wyoming...yea he’s got 3 definite NFL guys at Wyoming. Do y’all even know how hard that is?

Neal Brown has assembled a pretty good staff down there at Troy, that guy is a future star in the making.

Dude won 10 games in 2016, 11 games last year with big wins against multiple P5 teams that have way more talent than his team. Even played Clemson close losing 30-24, that's pretty **** insane when you consider how large the talent gap is between Clemson & Troy.

He only makes $800,000 a year, he's going to get a big time P5 job by next year no doubt.

I don't see Richt ever replacing Manny with a big name coach, if we ever get another DC during his tenure it will probably be someone he elevates from within & I'm guessing it'll be a guy like Jess Simpson.

With that said, there are some pretty good DC's that don't get enough love in the media. And for the Super-fan sycophants NO I'm not saying all these coaches are better than Diaz, so relax & put the grenade down.

Mike Tressel at Mich St is one of the best in the game in building great Run Defenses year in & year out, despite the limitations of their program.

Danny Gonzales at ASU is a good up & comer that has already turned that Defense around, but was also a very good DC at SD State, they had 49 INT's in a 2 year time span in 2015 & 2016.

Lance Anderson at Stanford is another one who rarely gets the credit he deserves, but has built nothing but great Defenses at Stanford. Bob Shoop is good DC with a solid resume with stints at Penn St & Tenn.

Look at what Justin Wilcox is doing at Cal, he's a young guy that you can see even in his first HC job that he's going to be a monster once he gets to better program with more resources.

But then you have to remember, there are good young coaches all over college football & not every single one of them will always be on great teams. Even Saban snatched a guy like Pete Golding who was coaching at Southern Miss & UTSA before he was hired at Bama to be a Co DC

Not every coach starts off immediately at P5 schools & hits the ground running, there's guys who are coaching at lesser schools who will eventually get a big time job.

I also think guys like Brian Jean-Mary, Jimmy Lake & Kevin Patrick will be great down the line.

This. 100%

I can promise you I could name 3-4 DC's at Ivy League, Div III, or FCS schools that no one has ever heard of, but are real talents in the making that would be great at a place like UM or any higher level of football.
