Just curious since there are a few people (including myself) who is disappointed with the job Manny has done this year. The defense has been good but not elite, and since we want to be elite...

What 4-3 coordinators do you guys think are better and/or more consistent than Manny Diaz?

The only one I can think of is Brent Venables and cheating a little by saying Bud Foster ( he runs a 4-2-5).
If you asked me before this year started I would probably list John Chavis but his defense got torched against lesser teams in 2 out of 3 games, and allowed 20 points in the game they won.
I thought Mike Elko was pretty good as well.
I also thought highly of Geoff Collins but he's a head coach now.

Any other 4-3 coordinators you guys think would do a better job than Diaz?

Elko is junk. Runs way to much zone

I don't see Richt ever replacing Manny with a big name coach, if we ever get another DC during his tenure it will probably be someone he elevates from within & I'm guessing it'll be a guy like Jess Simpson.

With that said, there are some pretty good DC's that don't get enough love in the media. And for the Super-fan sycophants NO I'm not saying all these coaches are better than Diaz, so relax & put the grenade down.

Mike Tressel at Mich St is one of the best in the game in building great Run Defenses year in & year out, despite the limitations of their program.

Danny Gonzales at ASU is a good up & comer that has already turned that Defense around, but was also a very good DC at SD State, they had 49 INT's in a 2 year time span in 2015 & 2016.

Lance Anderson at Stanford is another one who rarely gets the credit he deserves, but has built nothing but great Defenses at Stanford. Bob Shoop is good DC with a solid resume with stints at Penn St & Tenn.

Look at what Justin Wilcox is doing at Cal, he's a young guy that you can see even in his first HC job that he's going to be a monster once he gets to better program with more resources.

But then you have to remember, there are good young coaches all over college football & not every single one of them will always be on great teams. Even Saban snatched a guy like Pete Golding who was coaching at Southern Miss & UTSA before he was hired at Bama to be a Co DC.

Not every coach starts off immediately at P5 schools & hits the ground running, there's guys who are coaching at lesser schools who will eventually get a big time job.

I also think guys like Brian Jean-Mary, Jimmy Lake & Kevin Patrick will be great down the line.

We should hire a guy that will have us first nationally in tackles for loss and 3rd down conversion percentage allowed,
Yeah....then on a 2nd and 13, we give up a 15yd completion because why??....because the middle of the field is Wide open due to All out Blitzes....Strikingly familiar with UM vs UV... (Last OB game)......UVs TEs are still running uncontested 11yrs later...

Just the fact that Knowles is seeing the mins he's seeing, and the liability he is, has me more than scratching my head....how tf are we in yr 3??..and have him in our secondary has me befuddled....

If we did ever have to find another one; Richt would have to find someone he trusts, meshes w other coaches, is a solid family man, is a mentor, and is spiritually sound. Add that to being a great coach and the list is pretty narrow if you ask me.

Manny Diaz is a good defensive coordinator and not not elite or perfect by any means. He excels at certain things but definitely have things you constantly question watching his defense. Regardless he’s a whale of an upgrade over what we previously had and with a few tweaks our defense CAN be elite. This is not a post to bash manny so although it’s early I will Acknowledge how we have improved on 3rd down efficiency regardless of the oppenent, even if you take away the Savannah state game we still would be #1 in the country in 3rd down defensive percentage rate which is impressive imo

I disagree! In order to have an elite Defense, we would have to have elite Defensive players in the program. 3rd year for Manny, after inheriting a caca defensive unit from a caca coach in D'Onofrio. Give the man some time.

Have we not improved from year to year under Manny?
