These are the defensive rankings for the Miami Hurricanes defense, being compared to last year.
Green means improvement, while red obviously means the opposite. Keep in mind, that these are not based on STATS. These rankings are based off a compilation of numbers, that includes the "rating" of every single play of the season (minus clock killers/garbage time). Plays against offensively efficient teams are weighted more than others. So these rankings DO NOT reflect the same rankings that can be found when researching stats.
Defensive FEI 44 spots
2016: 13
2015: 57
Defensive Efficiency 43 spots
2016: 27
2015: 70
Defensive TD Allowed Rating 39 spots
2016: 19
2015: 58
Forced Turnovers Rating 67 spots
2016: 92
2015: 25
For FEI ratings, the defense made huge movement in every category...unfortunately, the biggest change was actually a drop of 67 spots in turnover rating. This is mainly due to catching only 8 interceptions this year, as opposed to catching 15 (nearly double) last year. We only improved by an average of 14 spots for every category in the FEI rankings (42 spots if you don't count turnover rankings, but turnovers make a huge difference).

For the most part, there was a huge improvement in every single category. No complaints here, as we improved by an average of 50 spots in the S&P defensive rankings. The biggest improvement was our rushing defense, which went from among the FBS worse, to Top 25 material. We also jumped from below average, to elite on standard down defense. Our defense on passing downs went from above average to elite.

Thank you, Coach Kuligowski. Your coaching skills in year 1 allowed the defensive line rankings to have the biggest average improvement, moving up an average of 65 spots...and that includes doing 48 spots worse at run defense on passing downs. In terms of that big negative, I could not find a reason for it by scanning through the offensive efficiency of teams that we have played, as most of our opponents were rated in the Top 50 for Offensive Efficiency (with the exception of Duke[102], NCST[64] and FAU[79]). However, it is amazing how we went from FBS worse in Stuff Rate, to 2nd in the nation...Along with our D-Line being ranked among the elite (5th) as opposed to 122nd last year in standard downs. This is a combination of a change in scheme (from a base/fill front, to an attacking front), and simply having THE best D-Line coach in the nation.
