Defense Tonight

Really not much to it. Great matchup. Great game. In games that are that close it’s one or two plays here or there that make the game. They got that blocked punt and that was it.

There were a couple times Indiana had numbers outside. First time all year I can remember Miami being confused in the secondary pre snap like that.

That was odd and surprising. Looked like last years defense where we were confused pre snap every play. Agreed that we haven't seen that all year. I thought we should have taken a to there.

Was just gonna post this. Hard to stomach. Just block on a punt safe and you’re very likely a national champion. Defense played well enough for us to win, again. Like they did for 16 games this year. Offense didn’t show up till halftime and special teams cost us a natty.
Eh, let’s pretend that doesn’t happen. Indiana gets the ball around midfield with a punt from our own 10ish I think? They probably get points. Maybe even get aggressive and go for it on 4th down like they were doing and score a TD, taking time off the clock. I think our defense needed a rest.

Awful post.

They probably get points? Their previous 3 drives, they ran 11 plays and netted SIX yards. So miss me with the probably got points.

But I’ll humor you, let’s say they get 3. Well, the TD got them 7. So take 4 from them, how many are we down at the end of the game? We need a FG to win, not a TD.

The only real disapointement I have is why on earth they kept leaving OConnor on the field on Becker instead of having OJ/Lucas on field together. OJ was great today and then taken off.

Also that QB draw was SO ******* OBVIOUS. I called it before it happened.
Didn’t matter who O’Connor was guarding. They were targeting him all night

Defense played a **** of a game all things considered. We knew they would hit some back shoulders on us. Would have liked to play more press in the 1st half but im sure Lucas being out had us play it safer. Offense was awful in the 1st half and special teams cost us 10 points. Defense played a championship level game. Offense was good after the halftime adjustments but left the defense hanging in the 1st half.

B grade.

Inability to get off the field in crucial 3rd and 4th downs was devastating.
They were 58% on 3rd down coming in. Literally the highest in history and they went 6 for 16 tonight. Defense played their *** off down their best CB for half. Brown out and I think OJ went out again in the 2nd half. If you told me before the game we held their offense to 20 I would have told you we would be celebrating #6. Instead our special teams ****ed us.

Defense did more than enough to win. That said, it wasn't a perfect performance.

Our tackling wasn't nearly as crisp as it needed to be. IU desperately needs to stay ahead of the chains, it's IMPERATIVE that you limit their gains, to make 3rd and 4 more 3 and 6+. Once you get them into third and long, they are a different offense. Mendoza cannot stretch the field vertically and their spammy RPO and back shoulder game doesn't do much when you are facing long distance situations. They also aren't built to play from behind, Miami not taking advantage of tempo early and making the game more of a track meet didn't help matters.

I don't see how this can be argued against. And let us not forget there were some obvious mismatches in the secondary that Indiana was able to exploit seemingly at will for key first downs.
