DE rotations: something to watch closely tomorrow

Sorry I didn't get to this sooner, as I had promised on HurricaneVision's thread, and now will likely cut it shorter because the game is tomorrow. It's been a hellish week.

Bottom line is our DE rotations have become very predictable. To the point we're not shuffling as much as being in a pattern. I watched all the DL snaps from the VT game, and saw that we'd bring in Trent Harris at LDE and D-Jax at RDE after a series or specific amount of plays. For example, if we get a 3 and out against ND in the first defensive series tomorrow, we'll likely have backup DEs in there for the 2nd series. Obviously, now D-Jax is out.

The relevance of this is greater now. Why? Because I also watched our incredibly talented phenom, Jon Garvin, have a few issues against the run against a backup LT. I'm not subscribing to this "ND left side of OL is unstoppable," but I am acknowledging Garvin may not quite be there yet as a guy to set, hold and dominate the edge. I mean, what more can we ask from the kid. Frankly, Joe Jackson himself has had a few plays where he peeks inside or gets caught. He also gets held like a beast.

So what does this mean?

I expect Manny to acknowledge this via blitz packages (e.g. corner or slot blitz), stunts and games. It makes us slightly more vulnerable and predictable on defense, and I'd look to see what ND calls as soon as we trot out our 2nd unit DL. Against our 1s, I expect them to attack in the quick passing game, with the QB run and outside. Against our 2s, I'd expect to see them test us downhill.

Coach Diaz can cover it up, but in doing so it leaves us with weaknesses elsewhere. It wouldn't surprise me to see ND move and score more often than we'd like. Perhaps a game in the 30s, though I hope the defense goes to the next level. Should be a really fun chess match to watch tomorrow. Then again, maybe Joe Jackson rotates out less or Garvin plays out of his mind at RDE. They're both certainly capable. And, I believe our defense still has another gear.

Ariz has hinted all week at DJ Johnson getting some burn. Maybe he is better against the run then Garvin?

Good post Lu. As long as our d line doesn’t get overrun tomorrow, coaching is going to make a big difference in who wins.

I think you're reaching here. I don't see our DE rotation resulting in a, "game in 30s" without us helping them in some other way. If they score 30+, we are in serious trouble.

Personally, I'd just cut down the rotation at RDE a bit.

FWIW, don't read the above as fear of ND. I've watched 4 of their games and the most important ones (e.g. UGA). They can be had.

I didn't present it as the sole reason we can (didn't say will, as no one knows for sure or they'd make a ****load of money in Vegas) see a game in the 30s. I don't think we're necessarily in trouble if they score 31 points. We should be able to score on them. A good amount.

There are two reasons why I have a very bad feeling about this game. You've hit on one of them. The Jackson loss is huge. Everyone glosses over it but Garvin and dj Johnson are true fresh being asked to go against the best lt-lg combo in the nation, potential 1-2nd rounders. NOTRE dame will score in the 30's and all the dullards will be on here blaming Kul, Diaz, richt, instead of just accepting the fact that our des got beat by better more experienced players.

Assuming we lose and assuming our reaction. Good post.

I'd be very surprised to see 30 plus vs our defense unless we turn it over a lot
I'd be disappointed because, as I said, I think the defense still has another gear. But, not surprised. Pumped to watched how we deal with the matchups and hopefully blow them up on the scoreboard offensively.

I'd subscribe to the possibility of them scoring on us. Frankly, they just match up with us a little better than some other teams have and that's ok, it happens. Plus then the injury of course. That being said I hope they play out of their minds and embarrass those asshats on national tv.

D Jax was better against that pass I think, and ND is definitely run first. I agree that Diaz will make us more vulnerable over the top, but that's ok. If they beat us though the air, so be it, but make them do it.

could toolbox get some of garvins snaps? chad and toolbox in at the same time? does help with the pass rush, but that's not ND anyway

I love garvin but I’m with you - he ain’t getting the snaps that DJax got as a backup. JJ is going to have his work cut out for him tonight. I think he might struggle against the run but he should win his battles more often than not on passing downs
